1888 proved that not all good publicity is good publicity. Smart debutantes should already know that the way to succeed in the 1889 season is to avoid publicity altogether! Five Tips For Social Success In The 1889 Season
1888 was, arguably, a year that saw relatively unknown names cast into the limelight for scandalous behavior, whether or not it was intentional. From unmarried women risking their lives—and their honor—to venture into the Irvingly fog unchaperoned to a handful of otherwise respectable ladies caught in elopement scandals, the events of 1888 can be used a set of guidelines for what budding debutantes should avoid in the new year.

But that also begs another question: what should budding debutantes do, to both avoid trouble and stand out among their peers in the upcoming season? Well, loyal readers, we at Witch Weekly have carefully complied a number of suggestions to avoid notoriety for the wrong reasons—and attract the right attention!

  1. Do not focus your attentions on a single* man. Showering a single man with attention is unlikely to go without notice; you'll be the talk of the rumor mills, and a reason for his friends to tease him (and not in the playful way your friends might tease you!)

  2. Do not draw unnecessary attention to yourself. In fact, if a situation calls for it, make yourself disappear altogether. While our tips might normally focus on bringing attention to yourself, we firmly believe the winners of this year's season will be those who make it through without a single mention besides their engagement announcement!

  3. Plain faces are all the rage. Avoid gentleman who looks like trouble probably is—and so is any gentleman who looks worth going through trouble for! Think Reuben Crouch, Edric Umbridge, and Rufus Bixby: while all three are arguably handsome, all three also brought unnecessary scandal onto young ladies in 1888!

  4. Stay with your chaperon. Some women seem to be under the impression that a chaperon exists to limit one's interactions, when it's quite the opposite! Remaining under the watchful eye of a chaperon ensures your maintained reputation, and thus never gives anyone a reason to "misplace" your invitation to a party.

  5. When it doubt, play it safe. Don't know how to skate? Don't attend the summer gala with an enchanted ice skating rink. Think the man's sister might be out to ruin you? She probably is. When it doubt, marry a family friend—a man of modest means is better than a wealthy one in social ruin.

* Please, do focus your attention on single men—as in, unattached ones—rather than married men.
