To Glove Or Not To Glove?
Although during winter months gloves are not so much a fashion choice as a necessity, propriety has often dictated that women wear gloves whenever they are outdoors, regardless of the season. Some formal events also necessitate keeping a pair of gloves on, but in most instances it is appropriate to remove them with one's coat and hat upon arrival, which puts fashion-forward young women in a bind: how to appropriately couple jewelry with gloves. Large, bulky gloves are often obviously unwieldy and risk harming the lady's appearance outside, though they can typically cover all but the most cumbersome rings. Slimmer, more attractive gloves, on the other hand, may necessitate the lady going without jewelry for the main event!

The choice of gloves is a complicated one, and much thought must be given as to the amount of time a lady is expected to be wearing them. For events with an outdoor component, such as garden parties or sporting events, women are advised to forego jewelry and instead choose a particularly fetching pair of gloves. Evening parties such as dances and formal dinners will, on the other hand, most likely mean that very few will see the woman in her "outer wear," and thus the primary consideration should be for planning her jewelry, and the gloves chosen merely to cover. The clumsiness of the gloves will not be an issue if she is escorted by a proper man who will open doors and lower carriage steps for her!

There is, however, a third alternative, lately debuted by a Italian fashionista. The warmer climate in the Mediterranean has made the wearing of full fingertip to elbow gloves quite odious to many young ladies, and so they have created what is called the "cuff glove;" simply put, these are composed of small collars that fit around a lady's wrists, and loose, decorative fabric which covers her hands without actually fitting over her fingers. It is yet to be seen whether this trend will catch in England, where propriety may dictate against it--but if they become popular, cuff gloves might serve the perfect balance between allowing ladies to bedeck themselves however they see fit, without having to wear cumbrous outer gloves (at least, not in warm weather).

Lace gloves are elegant and form fitting, but it is absolutely impossible to pair them with jewelry such as rings or bracelets without risking a snag.

Traditional gloves can cover most slender rings, but are often bulky and clumsy.

A pair of “cuff gloves” -- the wave of the future?
