Appearance: Bright eyed and baby faced, he is quick to smile and expressive from head to toe. He is reliably presentable, in both dress and grooming, owing mostly to the good influence of his parents but his hair often becomes a bit tousled through the course of the day and he has yet to figure out how to do his own mending which means he would not be surprised if you pointed out he was missing a button. He is 5'6 and right handed
History:
Jack was born Henry Dorset in 1870. He didn’t start going by Jack until he went to Hogwarts in 1881. His father had died when he was 8 and one of the few things he remembered strongly about him was accompanying him to work a few times where he'd be greeted jovially: "Hey Jack!". When it came time for him to make new friends at school he just sort of… adopted the name for himself. Of course, he had no idea that Jack wasn't actually his father's given name but a sort of generic name you called someone when you didn’t know their actual name. And the fact his mother had gotten remarried earlier that year replacing his father was purely coincidental.
It would never occur to him to think so but it was quite lucky for him that his mother remarried. His stepfather was a watchmaker with a fairly successful business of his own that, along with his mother's earnings and Jack's own summer work, allowed him to stay in school through his fifth year. He graduated in 1886 with a mixed bag of OWLs. He missed the mark with Potions (no love loss there) and Arithmancy (which he maintains was mistake to take in the first place) but was quite pleased with his E's in Charms, Transfiguration, and DADA.
Once out of school he took up work in his stepfather's shop, destined to learn the trade and take up the mantle. And this time it did occur to him that he was lucky in this regard. Watchmaking was a good trade to learn - it was a safe profession with a respectable income. Of course that knowledge didn’t make it any easier. It was tedious work with intricacies so precise and minute one needed a magnifying glass just to see them properly.
He gave it his best shot, he really did, but the work simply did not suit him. Around his 20th birthday he realized he was so unsettled as a budding watchmaker that he'd begun entertaining ideas of messing up on purpose in the distant hope that his stepfather might write him off as hopeless and ban him from the shop. Of course he'd never actually go through with such thoughts. Instead he eventually decided that being honest and risking becoming the family disappointment was better than staying to wallow in his own misery eventually going blind and dying young from boredom
After briefly looking into a career as a hitwizard, which seemed terribly glamorous on the surface, he lands in the Hogsmeade Constabulary in 1891. To say he is excited would be putting it mildly. He's taken to it like a fish to water, and the sheer relief of being free from watchmaking has only made the transition that much more gratifying. Of course he is still decidedly the rookie, by both age and general demeanor. The story of his first encounter with a prostitute while on patrol is one that gets retold often.
He's also moved into his own flat in Hogsmeade which he shares with a roommate or two so that some of his earnings can go towards to his siblings education. He goes home to visit regularly and his mom never misses a chance to complain that he's clearly not eating enough. Meanwhile his step father usually finds a way to artfully inform him that watchmaking is doing just fine without him. Whether or not this is sarcasm is completely lost on Jack.
Personality: Earnest, amiable, and a bit naïve. He has the foundation of a solid upbringing but lacks experience and even maturity in many ways. Sometimes ruled by the ebb and flow of his emotions, he has a good enough head on his shoulders to keep him out of any real trouble. A bit of a flirt, consciously or not, and a bit cavalier in all the ways you'd expect a young man with new freedoms and adventures to be. He's romantic by a few definitions, though he might not realize it, and is probably at risk of marrying the first girl who calls him 'Henry' with any kind of fondness.
Other: Though he doesn’t consider himself notably smart he is an intuitive spellcaster. It is not uncommon for him to cast nonverbal spells in the heat of things and would probably be able to master wandless magic given time and training.
