So it's not been part of the sites canon, mostly because its not been part of the potterverse before now, but what do we think of the inclusion of Maldictus in the new film?
I read a suggested idea that Ms. Norris was the girl that Filch loved, a muggle born witch who he had been friends with (Snape/Lily style) and when he discovered she was a Maldictus he stuck by her and when her curse took full hold he decided to look after her. So this is why he's so enamoured with her and gets obsessive when she is hurt by the basilisk.
It's not canon, or at least not something J.K has addressed but I have absolutely accepted it as a head canon!

My understanding was that the blood curse was hereditary, though, so idt a Muggleborn witch could have it.
This whole thing feels like retconning to me but we'll have to see how it's handled in the movie. I'm not mad about it *yet.*

It is retconning in a big way...I just like the head canon that Ms. Norris is a maledictus because of how File oh felt about her

Yeah, but there's "Dumbledore was gay" level retconning, where it wasn't ever explicitly stated in the books but looking back there is
some evidence in support of it and it's believable that JKR had that in mind the whole time but was being subtle about it, and then there's "gratuitous retconning to try and make things more interesting." The Obscurus/Obscurial falls into the former category IMO because it makes so much sense that Ariana Dumbledore was one and that that caused the rift with Dumbledore/Grindelwald and Grindelwald's obsession with them following that. It still could end up in the latter category if they really butcher the way they play into the plot in the later movies.
JKR has been criticized in the past for trying to retcon in diversity (like her
suggestion that Hermione might be black) just for the sake of staying relevant and I'm not particularly keen on that. Right now, I don't really think there's any evidence in the books to suggest Nagini was more than just a snake... so we'll have to see whether the movie makes her humanity relevant at all or whether this is just a way to shoehorn in another character with a tie to the main HP timeline.

See I don’t believe it was a retcon - Nagini means half woman half snake, plus it was dubious the entire time what her species was and her venom stumped the healers when Arthur Weasley was attacked. She was mysterious from the get go.

+1
I don't think it's a retcon either. There's a difference between changing established fact and casting a light on character that was always said to be mysterious. I've always thought there was more to Nagini than a normal snake; even if she
was a horcrux, it doesn't explain her blindly following Voldemort's orders. If all horcruxes did that, I don't understand why Harry would (1) be able to fight Voldemort, and (2) be able to fight
her.
For me the biggest question will be "how the heck did she end up on the 'bad' side after all of this?"

My question is whether this is going to make Neville look slightly less heroic for lopping off her head.
no, really MJ is just showing off at this point

Tbh her name is another part of the reason this feels clumsy to me. Did Voldemort not know her name and just decide to refer to her as "snakelady" and she was cool with that, or did her mother name her Nagini knowing (??? how did she know?) that she was going to end life as a snake?
Like I get that she would know she'd be a maldictus, but they're not all snakes, so... idk, it's weird.
Says the girl with a werewolf character named Lupus.

I think it's a weird attempt to shoehorn in more representation, especially since the word Nagini is South Asian and human!Nagini is East Asian >.>;
but I have no thoughts further than that. Charming-wise, I think we the admin team would be veeeery hesitant to sign off on it as of right now xD

MJ made this!

Nagini could have been the name they gave her at the circus act and she adopted it as her own for the sake of either anonymity or self-empowerment. Part of me is theorizing that when a maledictus turns permanently, they don't lose all memories of their human self but just the ability to express it. Seeing that Voldemort could speak snake, he could have been the only creature she'd been able to communicate with/bond with who understood her (from a human perspective) in
years, hence why she could have grown attached to him in the end.

Maybe there was a naming seer involved
There are a lot of "retcons" and "light-shedding" that have bothered me, and while I have to wait to see how Nagini is played out to have an opinion, the idea of
blood malediction is basically the only thing from CC that doesn't shit all over my childhood and I genuinely think it's pretty cool!

Yeah I'm assuming it's either a naming seer thing or a name gained later in life, although it really wouldn't be the first time in fiction where a character conveniently happens to have a foreshadowy name.
