Fish Out of Water
#1
Novemb 1, 1894 — Augurey Beak Cafe

It had been a full four months since Mr. Abernathy had suggested this to Harry, but in his defense Harry had thought it was probably a good idea to keep his nose out of activism things until after the Wizengamot made their decision. Mostly, he hadn't wanted to deal with questions he didn't have answers to.

But now the decision had been made, predictably imperfect though it was, and so Harry was at least making a tentative attempt at... something. He'd been told there were meetings, but the thing was, he needed to actually go to the Augurey to know when those even were, and, well, here he was, feeling like a fish out of water. He could only hope it wasn't obvious, but he was pretty sure that was beyond him.

"Excuse me," he said, awkwardly to someone as he stood near the entrance. "Ah, could you direct me to where the cork board is?"

Eileen was busy stomping around the bar, trying to clean up after an influx of drinkers, collecting glasses and cleaning tables as she went. Her work was far from glorious, but she liked that it kept her moving and it was never, ever boring.

As she was sweeping by the entrance with a large tray of empty drinkware, she stopped as she was asked a question. "Oo, last time I saw it," it didn't exactly have a permanent home anywhere. "It was over by the entrance to the loo." A good spot if any, people waiting to use the bathroom, with nothing better to do. Sometimes it was at the end of the bar, sometimes it was right here near the door. "If it ain't there, I can take a more thorough look." She added, thinking at least she should probably know where it had landed.

Harry blinked, momentarily taken aback by the implication that this board moved--well. It was hardly his first experience with something seeming strange and impractical. "Thank you," he said, and headed off in the direction she indicated. Given the directions he'd been given, Harry wasn't too surprised when he reached the indicated spot and there was no cork board--or anything like it--in sight.

Feeling decidedly silly, but figuring he was already here anyway, Harry made his way back to the woman and said, "Er, sorry, but it wasn't there."

Leeny had taken her tray full of glasses to the bar to be washed, by her, because who else would do it, and waited to see what the verdict was on the cork board.

When it was determined that the board was not in fact, where she had thought, Leeny swore softly in Gaelic under her breath. "Oh that'll teach me for not nailing it down somewhere." She sighed, rolling her eyes. "There's two other places. Let me see." She hopped back from the bar itself and made her way down the far end. Sometimes if it was propped up at the corner where the wall was, it slipped between the two. The Augurey wasn't exactly the epitome of good craftmanship.

"Ah," she muttered, looking down into the gap. "I think it's in there." But even her tiny hands weren't going to be able to squeeze it out.

Harry followed behind the woman, and stared down into the gap. Right. He cleared his throat. "Well, maybe you can help me? I was looking for something about meetings." It was worth asking, at any rate. At this rate, if Harry actually made it to a meeting, it would be a miracle.

"Meetings?" Leeny was still trying to work out how to get the cork board from it's place wedged between the bar and the wall. Maybe she could levitate it out. "What kind of meetings?" The Jude kind? The unofficial kind? The kind Leeny knew where happening, but wasn't dumb enough to interrupt? This guy looked pretty clean-cut, entirely unlike her usual clientele, so she was a little at a loss as to what information to give him.

"I mentioned an interest in activism to a Mr. Abernathy," Harry said. "He recommended I come here." He shifted from one foot to the other, a little uncomfortable. He was most certainly out of his element, but he supposed nothing was worth doing that didn't require a little effort. Or some such thing, anyway.

This was a Kieran thing. That made more sense. "Ah, hang on." Leeny hopped back down to the floor and went to the far end of the bar where she kept a small stack of whatever leaflets the boys had determined were important and relevant. "This might help." She said as she passed the leaflet over. "He's a close friend, I can mention you stopped by? If you want him to get in touch?" Eileen wasn't quite the activist her friend were, but she would happily follow them through anything, so she just quietly supported their causes like this.

Oh, that was a relief. Harry sighed, taking the leaflet the woman offered. "Thank you," he said. "I would appreciate it. You can tell him Henry Berkwood came by." At least this wasn't a total bust. He already felt very silly, to be honest.

Eileen grabbed the little pad of paper she kept in her apron and wrote it down. She was usually pretty good with names, but this way she could just leave it for Kieran if they passed like ships in the night as they usually did. After tucking it back in her pocket, Eileen stretched out a hand. "Eileen Buchanan, care for a drink while you're here?" It felt weird not asking, even though he'd come in for a different reason.

"Sure," Harry said. "I've got time for a drink. Thanks." He might as well.
