Although it hasn't been "revealed" yet I'm sure you all can piece together where things are going based on the DP article today, so here's the OOC reveal. :P
The Timeline of Events
- Mortimer Lansing (NPC) got the bright idea that he ought to make his fortune running a traveling menagerie/circus, but hey, exotic animals are really difficult (and expensive) to acquire. Women wandering the streets of Hogsmeade are comparably less difficult and expensive. Bonus: maybe they'll be smarter than animals and willing to learn some cool circus tricks?
- This month he's been abducting people and transfiguring them into exotic animals (magical or non) to flesh out his collection. They've been living in a Newt-Scamander-style expandable trunk since they were kidnapped.
- Unfortunately human transfiguration was really the only magical niche Mr. Lansing excelled at and the expansion charm on his trunk malfunctioned, leading the animals to be loosed at the train station when he attempted to leave. (Afternoon of Feb 17)
- The Ministry initially thought these were all real animals, until a hapless DRCMC employee (cough, Ford, not that he's admitting to it) misfired a spell and accidentally un-transfigured one (Agape Lestrange). (Morning of Feb 19)
- At this point the Ministry looked into all the animals they had captured so far and realized
some of them are transfigured humans, while some are in fact animals.
- Mortimer Lansing is in custody.
SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR ME?
I'm one of the victims:
Show
— You have total control over the events after the trunk charm failed. Pick which animal you want to be and go thread around Hogsmeade tearing shit up, or not. Have a rescue thread, or not. Whatever you want to do.
— If your character was captured early (before the afternoon of Feb 19th), they can be un-transfigured at the Ministry and returned home free of injury (except perhaps some ego bruising xD) on the 19th.
— Your character can be reclaimed/un-transfigured by the Ministry at any point after the 19th.
— You could also have a Concerned Citizen attempt to untransfigure your character. Since this is complicated magic, amateur attempts could result in injury (up to you) or appearance changes (again, up to you). Whether these are lasting or permanent is again up to you. Your character could also seek redress through the Ministry or the hospital, depending on the severity of the injury/change.
— "Animals" could end up anywhere in Hogsmeade or the Forest, but I don't think they could get into Hogwarts grounds due to the Headmaster's Barrier, so keep that in mind.
— Regardless of when/how you return to human, anyone can choose to suffer a loss of personal goods (including your heirloom family necklace or your wand or something else of sentimental value), or these could be recovered from Lansing and returned to you (in damaged condition or not)
— If you're unsure about something just make it up and go with it; I'm not the plot police xD Do whatever seems most fun for you.
I'm a Hogsmeade resident:
Show
— Threads from Feb 18th onward could involve some interruption by exotic animals, if you fancy! Some of these are people and some are animals, so run wild

— If you want to try and un-transfigure a person and get it not-quite-right, that could be fun!
— You could also try to un-transfigure an animal who wasn't ever a person in the first place, which, uh... not sure how that will work out for you but let us know how it goes
— Again, feel free to make it up as you go along; I'm not the plot police.
I'm a Ministry employee:
Show
— Dept Regulation & Control of Magical Creatures was responsible for the round-up, starting the afternoon of Feb 18th. This is technically a Beast Division thing but due to the amount of chaos caused, it's more of an all-hands-on-deck situation for the Department, so feel free to have your Ministry employee involved. Dept of Magical Accidents & Catastrophes could also assist with ~magical animals who were causing magical chaos.
— Improper Use of Magic Office is officially in charge of the un-transfiguration efforts. If someone was unsuccessfully or only partially un-transfigured by a civilian, that could go to MA&C or the hospital depending on the severity.
— Dept of Magical Law Enforcement will be taking statements from all of the victims prior to releasing them to their homes, and will of course be prosecuting Mr. Lansing.
— Anyone not recovered in a reasonable timeline may have DMLE/DRCMC collaborate on a search for them, once they've figured out what kind of animal they're looking for.
Can I change my mind about something? Yep

If you didn't sign anyone up as missing but the animal thing sounds cool and fun, it's not too late to retcon it in if you want. Likewise, if you signed someone up to go missing and this now seems like the Worst Thing Ever, feel free to retcon it out. My feelings won't be hurt.

MJ made this <3
