Stella Pendergast vs. Georgianna Shacklebolt
#1
February 8th, 1895 — Hogwarts Great Hall

If Abraxas Crabbe needed any further evidence that he was on the absolute cusp of manhood, it was that he—as a long-time member of the dueling club, and a prefect to boot—had been asked to help serve as a judge in the dueling tournament. While others (Flora) might have suggested the time would be better spent preparing for the upcoming Nastily Exhausting Wizard Tests, the Hufflepuff had entered the tournament himself anyways—and besides, what was better for preparing for practicals than actually casting (or judging) spells?

This was a responsibility he took seriously, and so the prefect diligently went over the rules for the two young ladies. Both were familiar to him given Rex's position within the castle, but with Miss Pendergast in his own house, he gave her a small smile of encouragement. It had not surprised him to see her sign up; though she was not quite so assertive as her twin sister, she was far and beyond her young cousin, who shared her dormatory.

"Miss Pendergast will start on the offensive," Rex concluded, "with Miss Shacklebolt on the defensive. Ladies, wands at the ready!"

Her first duel! She'd written home to Momma and Poppa to the tell them and she hadn't been able to sleep past night with her excitement. Now in the moment, she realized she really wasn't all that sure about just how many people were staring at her. It was a bit different than being in class where everyone went at once. She was never the sole focus of someone's attention. Well she supposed Miss Shacklebolt was here too but she would just react to what Stella did. Everyone was waiting for her to start.

Returning her prefect's smile - it was reassuring to have someone she knew moderating- she looked towards the Ravenclaw girl and offered a second smile and the customary bow. Then she raised her pine wand and casted a dancing charm, hoping that if Miss Shacklebolt was to busy jigging she couldn't spare breath to block.

Gia was so excited to be here! She'd hesitated at first. She was doing well in all of her classes, but she wasn't in Dueling Club. There were so many things to do and so many things to learn; Gia was upset there weren't more hours in the day to try everything. She'd told Mama and her professors and any and everyone who would listen to this. It seemed to be a feeling most people had, but Gia was learning that some people weren't curious and that didn't make any sense at all. Gia was curious and that meant trying everything new she could. Club or not, Gia did her best to arrive with some form of a plan of attack and told herself to enjoy the experience.

With a small wave at Des somewhere in the audience, Gia curtsied to Miss Pendergast and raised her wand, smile wide on her face. "Protego!"

Rex was surpised when the incantation that left Miss Pendergast's lips was not for the expected disarming charm. Perhaps, the Hufflepuff thought, first years were more creative than he gave them credit for. The Ravenclaw, in answer, did go the more perfunctory route, but it served her well: Miss Shacklebolt easily cut off the jinx at the metaphorical legs.

"The first point will go to you, Miss Shacklebolt," he confirmed for the young witch. "You'll begin our second round, too."

Gia's eyes went wide. She'd done it! She'd scored her first point in a duel. Even father should be proud of this update. Now it was time to see if she could break a guard, too. This, Gia thought, would be harder. "Expelliarmus!"

Well... that hadn't gone well. Well she supposed it had gone well but Miss Shacklebolt had done better. But there really wasn't all that much time to think before the next round started and Stella figured she wouldn't get much better than a shield charm. It was easier to be creative in an attack than when someone was attacking you!

"And once more, to Miss Shacklebolt," the prefect proclaimed. After all, it was hard to properly cast one's shield charm if one's wand was being actively ripped from their hand. "You will progress to the next round of the tournament, and take five points for Ravenclaw."

Rex offered Miss Pendergast a sympathetic smile.
