Friday, September 10, 1891; After Dinner - Quidditch Pitch

This was the last time she would pick a team. Hermia prepared as best she could for the wave of nostalgia that blanketed her as she made the familiar trip from the locker rooms to the pitch. Her broom was a comfortable weight in her left hand, the charmed equipment trunk floating easily along with her. Waving to the few members of her House that came to watch from the stands, Hermia let the familiar rush community ground her as she played her part one last time.

“Good evening, Badgers, thank you and welcome! Tonight, we are adding two beaters to our team of champions. Think of your exercise tonight as a celebration of the return of beaters to Hogwarts quidditch. Tonight, your task is to protect the hoops from the bludgers. You have five minutes each and you are tasked with beating back as many bludgers as you can.” With a grin, Hermia opened the trunk and released the charmed training bludgers – five of them, all brightly colored. Setting them free, the five raced skyward, hovering near the height of the goal hoops.

“These bludgers will aim for the hoops, but they will also be coming for you. And yes, getting hit stings, but these are a bit softer than regulation bludgers, since there are so many. Each bludger is a different color and I will be counting the color marks on both you and the hoops to evaluate your flight. There are several targets hovering up there with you and any bludgers you manage to send to the targets count as double. Give us your best, grab a bat, and off you go!”

Yuri had decided about 15 minutes after last years Quidditch tryouts were finished that he desperately wanted to be part of the Quidditch team. He had trained as hard as he could, volunteered to help Billie run drills and thrown himself into club Quidditch with as much gusto as he could manage. A year of good nutrition and full stomach had brought on a growth spurt and he was no longer entirely the little starvling he had been when he joined the school last year. Mister Mondragon had bought him his own broom - which was very exciting and he was determined to prove that he was worthy of such an amazing gift by making the house team and being a beater sounded like as much fun as one could reasonably hope to have on a broom! Bashing things with a bat! what more could an almost teenage boy ask for!

When Miss Bonaccord, who seemed far too pretty and ladylike to play quidditch told them to kick off, he did as instructed and flew through the exercises she had set out for those who desperately wanted to be beaters.

He landed - relatively pleased with his performance.

MJ Made Beautiful Things!

The most notable player that caught Leo's attention as they made their way onto the field was another younger student. A year or two above him, to Leo's knowledge. Still, Leo was under the impression that he still had more mucle than the older student. Probably a class difference, then. Perhaps the older boy was sickly. Bad match for quidditch if that was the case. He was trying to get used to the idea of being a Hufflepuff, hoping his parents wouldn't be too disappointed.

But then the captain began talking, and all thoughts of other classmates and house sortings were out of sight. Focus. He needed focus. The instructions were clear, and then they were off. Leo was in the air and up for the task at hand. Perhaps this would bring some pride to his family. The thought gave him more drive to his task.

Hermia congratulated the group of young hopefuls as the tests were completed. She had difficult choices ahead of her; the future of Hufflepuff's Quidditch dominance at stake. For this year, and her successors, she had plenty of work ahead.
