IC Gryffindor Tryouts '91
#1
September 9th, 1891 — Evening, Hogwarts Quidditch Pitch

This would be the first year, Cameron reflected, that the Gryffindor team would not be the "youngest" or "least experienced" team. More than half of Hufflepuff's players were in their fourth year or lower, and Ravenclaw and Slytherin were having to almost completely rebuild their teams. Gryffindor was also advantaged in that their players had not only the advantage of being older, but the advantage of longevity, of strong relationships between the teammates. They were a family—and in the case of him, Maddy, Alcyone, quite literally.

Cameron had been pondering all these things and more, including the inclusion of two beaters. He'd scribbled down their best plays from the previous year before ever leaving school in May, only to find out that the beaters had been reintroduced. Half of the plays had been modified over the summer, and the other half tossed completely. That did not, however, change his opinion.

Gryffindor could win this year. They would win, if he had anything to do about it.

"'Evening!" he called out, trying to silence the hushed whispers that filled the area of the pitch where he'd gathered the prospective players, "Gryffindor was so close to winning the Cup last year, and I don't intend to let it slip through our fingers this year. We're looking for a fresh pair of beaters and a keeper."

And then he went on to explain what would be required of them:
  • Beater candidates will practice hitting floating targets around the pitch that Cameron enchanted himself (#yayCharmsOWL).
  • Keeper candidates will attempt to block the shots made by the Gryffindor chasers.

"And don't forget: sportsmanship is just as important as skill," he said, "The only way we'll win is to work together. Good luck!"

Please post once for each position you are trying out for. Make sure you have filled in the requisite form and have received a “like” from Kayte before posting! The deadline for all posts is 7pm EST on September 10th.

By posting in this thread, you agree to have your character present and whole regardless of what happens between the date of posting and the IC date listed.

Annie loved to fly. Last year, she had been unsuccessful in her attempts to make the quidditch team, but as a first year with zero experience on a broom beyond her first week of flying lessons, she'd had a fair excuse. But now, going into her second year with an entire of year of flying under her belt, she was determined to join the female-dominated quidditch team, even if it meant having to impress their boy captain.

She kept a smile on her face throughout Mr. Gillenwater's speech, trying to look eager but not childish or silly. When they were given the go-ahead, Annie found her broomstick and mounted it, and joined the other prospective beaters in the sky.

She did her best, and then with a heavy sigh cleared her mind to join the prospective keepers.

Sportsmanship, hmm. Jimmy wasn’t so sure about that – being a team player? not being a sore loser? caring about playing a good game? hmph – but since his reputation with the rest of Gryffindor might be in need of some repairing, Jimmy had thought it wise to try out. In case, in spite of his diminutive size, he proved the best keeper of all time and saved every shot and helped Gryffindor win the cup and make up for all the house points he was very good at losing.

At least keepers didn’t have to do too much teamwork... although, Jimmy thought, as another quaffle throw came hurtling towards him with more force than he’d anticipated, he wasn’t particularly enjoying being on the wrong side of this team either.

After that trial, Jimmy dove down for a bat, glad for the opportunity to be armed when no other players on the pitch were allowed to be wielding heavy blunt implements. (He didn’t think beaters were supposed to be this small, particularly, but he was good at dodging the bludgers, anyway, and maybe he was stronger than he looked?) Greta’s brother was much more fun and way cooler than she was, probably, so surely Jimmy would nab a spot this year.

Trying to make the best of a rather... annoying situation Oberon picked up his bat and grabbed his broom as he launched himself into the air. The thought about not being picked this year not crossing his mind... after all this was just a formality... wasn't it?

As he took aim at the floating targets he looked at those who had come to try out this year and couldn't help but wish he'd tried just that little bit harder to mend the rift between Gillenwater and Selwyn because he had some severe doubts.

He tried not to concentrate on the two small second years who were also trying out.

He knew he was a large boy... but at least with Selwyn he didn't feel quite so much like Goliath.

Finished with his Beater trial - he grabbed his broom, a second time, intent to prove that even if last year he hadn't tried out for Chaser (he was a rubbish chaser in all honesty and he'd still been holding onto the glimmer of hope that at some point throughout the year they'd reinstate Beaters and he'd be back) he was willing to try new things for the team. His mother had been running him ragged practicing both positions over the summer - as apart from Beater Keeper was his only alternative.

Sloane was the seeker afterall and he really was not built to be agile enough and the only good Chaser he could be would be as a human bludger but he could defend those hoops like a boss.

Eros was excited to try out for Quidditch. He was not allowed his own broom since he was a first year but the school broom felt like it would serve him well enough. First, he went through the Beater tryout. He did his best to hit as many moving targets as possible before landing and preparing for the keeper tryout.

Flying into the air for the Keeper tryout, Eros once again did his best. He was up against older players with more experience but he was still excited for the opportunity to try out. He made an attempt to block as many shots as possible before finally landing down. Now all that was left for him to do was to wait for the results to be announced.

Keepers. She was more likely to make it on the team as one of those than a beater, so she made sure to give her best effort. She might have been small, but she was quick! Keepers needed to be quick. She could do that. She would do that.

After her trial was over, she touched back down on the pitch and waited for the tryouts to come to a close.

Wallace had chosen not to try out for the Quidditch team after Sloane had gotten onto the team but not him out of bitterness years before. He had not been intending to try out again but had changed his mind at the last minute. A lot of the students trying out were a lot younger than him which should be confidence boosting honestly but it wasn't. After all, his baby sister had beaten him out years before.

He kicked off and went through the Beater trials before touching back down to do the Keeper one.

Wallace kicked off once more and went through the Keeper trials. He did his best to block the shots coming his way. He hoped he would make the team this time. Otherwise, it was just going to be downright humiliating.

Once everyone had had their time to try out, Cameron called everyone into a circle at the middle of the field.

"Good work, everyone!" he said, beaming at the potential beaters and keepers, and then at his own teammates who were present. "It shouldn't take us too long to make a decision. The roster will be posted in the Great Hall, so keep an eye out!"
