Dear “Affection Not Necessary”
#1
6th July, 1890

My dear lady,

I daresay affection is not too much to ask for in one’s companionships. I have been a husband before, so expect I would not fall short in that regard. I am perhaps a touch older than some young men, but the last years without a wife have made it clear what a house lacks without a woman in it, and I have missed the company.

But tell me more of yourself. Do you prefer the city or the countryside?
Yours,
E. P.

Dear. E.P,
Thank you for your letter, I was delighted to hear from you. I did not think that a girl as modest as I am would be in receipt of such a response by a gentleman of good birth, and who has already proven himself to be a success in marriage!

I admit that I am torn between being sorry for your grief, and my own good fortune at having heard from you. I would hope to make myself an agreeable life companion to a respectable gentleman of good family and enrich his life by bringing joy and family to his home.

I enjoy both city and country life, the city is too hot in the high summer, and there is nothing more pleasant than country quiet when the days are long and hot. That is not to say that I am a wall flower, I carry myself in the season well and would be a good hostess with the opportunity, but as I have no household of my own reign over I have not had the opportunity. But in direct answer to your question, I should find that I would enjoy wherever my family were.

With Care,
Miss L.Z

Miss L. Z.,

You flatter me, I am sure. I am equally sure that you have nothing you need to be modest about, though I can assure you modesty is a most becoming virtue. A lack of experience in running a household is no obstacle; it is something that can well be learnt.

I confess to being a country man at heart, though I spend some time in town and many a day confined to my study. I have one son from my previous marriage who will be soon off to school, but otherwise the house would be all my wife’s domain again to do with as she pleases. And what of your family? Is it a large one? Have you many siblings?

Yours,
E. P.

Dear E. P.

I have completed all appropriate education for a lady of my class and breeding, and, as you note need only practical experience and practice before I could say that I was mistress of the domestic arts.

I have only one brother, who is good, kind, modest and the pride of our family as a first born son should be, he shall make an excellent match for any young lady of breeding, but I do not wish to be a burden on my family for any longer than is absolutely necessary. Do not misunderstand me, I am no spinster, I am not yet 21, but just as my brother has begun his career, so too should I seek to begin mine as the dutiful and appropriate wife.

I hope my candor in this matter is not off putting, I have not the patience for the coquettish arts of most debutantes, I prefer plain spoken truths than artful deceptions.

Kindly
L.Z

Miss L. Z.,

I too had the one brother only, though he passed away many years ago. You are indeed very young - perhaps not even in your prime yet - but if it is a guiding hand you desire, I am willing to offer it. If I were to take another wife, it is a surety that she would be well provided for.

And I too am in the business of unvarnished truths: I do despise a liar. I shall be plain, then, that the most illustrious days of my ordinary career are perhaps behind me; in recent years my primary passion has been my academic research, and much of my time now is devoted to my manuscripts in my study. Though I cannot call my work a cheering subject - it is in fact rather controversial amongst the general public - it is a necessary one for the betterment of society, and I have no intention of giving it up.

If this is no obstacle to the future you envision, I would be much obliged to make your acquaintance in person.

Yours,
E. P.
