For a Friend

Dear “Fair Maiden For a Friend?”

I confess I do not often think of writing in answer to advertisements in Witch Weekly, but something about yours struck me. I too miss the friends I had at Hogwarts - or maybe I just have not had enough sleep, so that writing to a stranger to offer unconditional friendship suddenly seems a good idea!

I hesitate before calling myself either intelligent or wise, but I would gladly be a friend should you be in need of one. It has been said that I have a good listening ear, if that helps... although unfortunately I am the eldest of my siblings, so I will try my best not to let myself slip into the elder sister lectures and the giving-of-unwanted-advice!

I will, of course, not be offended should you choose not to answer, but if you do see some hope here, I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
A Future Friend?

Friend,

Offering friendship to a stranger is not the strangest thing I've done. Most of my current friends are—predictably—men, and ones who are a few years older than myself. Some have families of their own, while others are the opposite: spending most of their time obsessing over quidditch not that I don't like quidditch. I've never had many female friends, but I do remember a few who always knew what to do and what to say.

The eldest of how many? I'm the youngest in my family of seven. There's four of us boys and three sisters, and you could only imagine what we've gone through together. Do you have any exciting tales of siblinghood?

Signed,
P

Dear P.

I have always thought it is good to be friends with all kinds of people. It keeps things interesting!

I expect life in my family was a little less interesting than yours, with seven of you! I have only one sister and two brothers apiece, and as you might imagine we are all rather close, even though one of my brothers is rather younger. I do have no end of cousins, though; I suspect it must be the same in your family? In any case, my favourite memories are long before we went to Hogwarts, I think - I am sure those days of building forts out of blankets in the garden will never be matched! I am often tempted to try these childhood things again - but I imagine I would get some odd looks were I to sit under tables nowadays.

I bet as the baby of your family you are quite adored by everyone. And I am intrigued by all these stranger things you say you have done!

(I hope you will forgive my writing to you as if we are already friends, only I have never been much good at smalltalk.)

Sincerely,
R
