Noble found himself nodding slowly at Daft's offer before he even realized he was doing so. Ford wouldn't know enough to be able to figure out that the cost was charity — especially because he'd met Daff before and might think she was doing it just to be friendly. He could feel some of his anxiety going down; not the nervousness about reputations and consequences, but certainly the nervousness about the minutia of the wedding. He exhaled. Some of the tension went out.

"You're kinder than I deserve," Noble managed, "And I'm grateful for it."

It was less awkward this time than for Verity's wedding, for which she was quietly grateful. So much had happened since then that she knew it would be, but it felt like she and Noble had come a long way since then and she was even more thankful for that.

Daff made a face at him, because he knew how she felt about statements like that. Things may not have worked out between them, but she didn't harbor any resentment about it. He was far more worthy than he gave himself credit for. Noble had done what he needed to for his family and she could respect and understand that now. It still made her a little sad to think about it, but she was content, more than happy, with where she was these days. "You're welcome, I'll always help any way I can." she assured him, smiling softly.

He should have expected her to make that expression; he smiled at her, soft but genuine. "I'll take the tea," Noble said, "If it's still on offer."

It occurred to him that this was probably the best conversation they'd had since they'd broken things off in 1891.
