Despite the promises I'm incapable of change - Noble Greengrass - February 19, 2024
February 19th, 1894 — Wildflower Florist
He couldn't go to Daff's flower shop until Monday, because of the weekend, and it was his first time out in a non-work context since the night of the incident. He couldn't write to her, because having a paper trail felt desperately irresponsible — or maybe it was because he wanted so badly to see someone who would not look at him like he was scum when they saw him. He could imagine what Ford was experiencing at work today — and did not want to think about what was happening with Miss Farley right now.
His stomach ached and his pulse picked up on the walk from the floo; he felt like everyone was looking at him. They were whispering, about Ford, and about Miss Farley, and — how much worse could this be if they were right about the things they were saying?
By the time he walked into Wildflower Florist, his face was pale, and his palms felt clammy. And Noble realized he did not even know if she was here on Mondays.

Despite her insistence otherwise, the shop had taken a bit of a hit in the wake of Zinnia's rushed nuptials. Daff hadn't told anyone yet, would tell Elias if it got worse, but her hopes to hire a manager before the wedding were dwindling rapidly.
She played with her engagement ring idly, looking through the books again to see if she'd missed anything or had done something wrong. It wasn't helping so she decided to put it back in her office. Mondays were slow, she did most of her business in the latter half of the week and so it was just her in the shop today. She did have an appointment this afternoon for an event, but at the moment didn't have much to occupy herself with.
Thinking she would go check on her saplings, she was about to head back into the greenhouse when the door bell announced someone's arrival. "Noble, hi." Daff was more than a little surprised to see him. "Are you alright?" The question hung in the air unnecessarily, she knew the answer; the question really was, would he tell her why?

Noble looked at her; his throat was thick. He wanted to shake his head but couldn't bring himself to. His palms were clammy, still — she knew him too well to think he was alright. It was a kindness for her to ask. He could not admit it, though. Daffodil Potts would be a married woman soon.
"I need a minute," he managed, finally.

Baffled by his state, Daff hurried to the door and flipped the little sign from opened to closed. "Go on upstairs, I'll make tea." She nudged him towards the staircase as she passed by him on her way to draw the curtains on the shop floor windows. She wasn't busy, it was reasonable for her to close for a little bit before her next appointment.
Something had to be seriously amiss for him to come here like this and it worried her more than she would like to admit. She hadn't seen him since that night in her parents' garden when he was half a ghost. So much had happened between then and now, and she realized she hadn't reached out to tell him that she and Elias had finally spoken about their past relationships. It had been an oversight, caught up in Zinnia's marriage and the engagement(s) and she knew now wasn't the time, but she would tell him like she promised.
"Go," she urged him, ready to ascend the stairs herself. Daff didn't know what else to do, so tea it was.

Noble went up the stairs she indicated, hurrying — his chest hurt but it wasn't really impacting his ability to walk yet. He leaned against her wall once he made it up the stairs, relieved to feel something solid behind his back.
"Have you heard the rumors?" he asked, voice wavering. If she hadn't, he wasn't sure how to explain them — but he would have to explain. There was nothing else he could attribute this state to.

Mildly alarmed, Daff followed him up and motioned for him to sit as she moved to the tiny kitchen to put the kettle on. Her stomach dropped when he asked about hearing rumors. If she'd learned anything in the last year, it was that jumping to conclusions got her nowhere, so she looked at him curiously. "No?" He knew she was disconnected from the rumor mill, had never thought it to be of use to anyone, especially when her sister and her new brother-in-law kept getting mentioned.
"What's happened?" She hovered in the doorway of the tiny kitchen watching him more warily now.

Noble chuckled. His panic — he had spent enough time romantically attached to Daffodil Potts to know the symptoms of panic — made the laugh sound high pitched. He focused on the press of the wall against his back. "Ford's getting married," he said, "He has to." Their reputation was dodgy, they'd nearly ruined Miss Farley, and Ford had to get married. And how on Earth was Noble going to keep everything together now?

Fortitude was getting married. He had to. Daff tried to digest what this might mean, but wasn't so sure she could fully wrap her head around it other than she did know it wouldn't help their financial troubles. Adding another person, even one coming with a dowry, was a lot of expense. "Who?" Daff thought she would have known if his brother was officially courting someone, but she really wasn't all that connected to such things.
"How can I help?" There likely wasn't much she could do, aside from the flowers for the wedding, but she would help in any way she could. Typically the bride's family paid for everything, so she would figure it out, but there was more to it than that.

"Jemima Farley," Noble answered. This would have been a perfect time for him to ask Daffodil about Jemima Farley, and complete his whole reason for this excursion. He reached up and tugged at the collar of his shirt.
"Sorry, could I — sit for a minute? My chest —" his chest hurt. It was as if he could not fully catch his breath. How was he supposed to retain anything about his future sister-in-law if he could not fully catch his breath?

Farley. The name was familiar. A friend of one of her sister's... Dahlia perhaps. Daff thought she might remember her from Hogwarts, but having graduated a few years ahead of Dahlia, it was hard to be sure. She could always ask, she supposed. Daff was starting to connect the dots though. They hadn't been able to get married, she found out later, because of the Greengrass family debts. Surely that hadn't changed to the point of Fortitude being able to marry Miss Farley and so Daff was curious to know what had actually happened to propel the situation here.
At the moment however, she was far more concerned about Noble; she knew that look all too well, had worn it several times herself over the years. Abandoning her post by the kitchen, Daff crossed the room slowly toward him until she was standing right in front of him. Gently she framed his face with her hands, searching those familiar brown eyes carefully. "Noble, you have to breathe." She reminded him softly.

Noble blinked at her, remembering the times that this situation had been reversed. In for four, out for seven. His breathing did not fully fix itself, but he was able to regulate it more. The feeling of Daff's hands on his face made it feel more real.
"It's — things are bad, Daff," he admitted, in a whisper. Ford was right. Things were bad, and kept getting worse — no matter what Noble did to try to control it.

It took a moment, but he seemed to be able to breathe a little easier and therefore so could she.
Things were bad bad, then.
It twisted her insides a little, only knowing the little she did, but Noble wouldn't have come here if he thought he could handle it. She didn't know what to say and she was saved for the moment by the kettle whistling in the kitchen. She let her hands fall slowly, passing him a weak smile as she moved to take the kettle off the heat.
In the kitchen she took a deep breath, unsure if how to navigate this, but knew she had to try and help somehow. Not wanting to take too long, she inhaled deeply once more and returned to the sitting room. "How bad?"

He should tell Daff exactly what he'd been advising Ford to tell everyone — that Ford and Miss Farley were in love, and that the marriage was happening more swiftly than everyone had intended. But he'd lied to Daff for so long, and even then he had never been good at it. Noble blinked at her like a deer in wand light. He looked at the kettle, then back at her. He swallowed.
"She's ruined," he said, voice shaky. He wasn't sure what he would say until something approximating the truth came out of his mouth, "It was — it was an accident, neither of them did anything."

Ruined. It was such a strong word for such a wide spectrum of situations. But she believed Noble when he said it was an accident. For all Daff knew of Fortitude, he didn't quite seem like the type.
If there were rumors already flying about, it was too late to explain their way around it, and it sounded like to save face they were going to go through with a wedding. Daff toyed with her own engagement ring subconsciously, knowing it was a nightmare situation to be in, especially in this case.
"I think she's friends with Dahlia," Daff hummed out. "But I don't really know her, they're a few years younger and Dahlia was always more outgoing than I was." Daff had always been approachable, but Dahls made friends so easily.
"How bad is this for everything else?" Surely the social ramifications would wane in a few weeks or months, but there were long term side effects.

Friends with Dahlia was a good sign. Noble didn't know Daff's sisters very well, by design, but he knew that the Potts were good people and so were the girls. If Jemima was friends with Dahlia, that meant she had good taste — even if she'd had the misfortune to be caught half-undressed at a party. He wanted to feel relieved, but could not quite manage it. He also still had not managed to actually sit down. He was still just standing there, with an incredible amount of tension running through him.
Noble shrugged his shoulders at her. "Well," he said, with something approximating a chuckle, "We have to pay for a wedding." A wedding, and alterations to the house, and how would any of the girls manage to get married now?
RE: Despite the promises I'm incapable of change - Daffodil Grimstone - March 28, 2024
"I can do it." She said immediately. Obviously she could do the flowers and all of the decorating. If she had to guess, it wasn't going to be a very big or flashy wedding anyway, given the circumstances. Daff had done enough wedding flowers already to know how these things typically went; it didn't have to be an huge expense. Typically the bride's family paid for most of it, but Daff could work around that too. She assumed Miss Farley came with a dowry, that had to help?
Regardless, Daff knew enough about weddings (was planning her own in a month's time...) to know how to make it happen without it costing a lot, especially with what she could cut from the total with the flowers. "I'm sure Dahlia would make the cake and desserts," Daff could convince her and Quin to do it as a wedding gift, if nothing else. There wasn't much else, Miss Farley's family was responsible for her dress and trousseau, so that wasn't a concern. The honeymoon might be the problem, but she wasn't sure she had a solution for that.
