A Good Housewife's Guide to Political Activism
Written by Louisa J. Chattermore

With the Ministerial election looming, many women are wondering where (if anywhere at all) is their place on the political scene? Most well-bred women understand that attending protests or engaging in door-to-door leaflet distribution is outside the realm of respectability, but what can respectable women do during the political season?

The first step is to choose a candidate to support. A good wife should consider her husband's interests primarily when making a selection. For some women her husband's preferences are already clear; he either pronounces them loudly or will provide a clear response if asked directly. For women whose husbands are less decisive, some additional research may be required. Consider your husband's general life position, including wealth, occupation, blood status, et cetera, and choose the candidate whose policies and positions seem most likely to advance his interests.

Once one has selected a candidate, learn a few facts about them which can be used in conversation to demonstrate their superior character. Try to work these facts into conversations with other wives whenever possible, thereby improving the general reputation of your candidate and their impression in the community.

While one must guard against idle gossip, it is also a supportive wife's duty to spread any information she receives that speaks to a lack of character for the other candidates. Should rumors circulate about your own candidate, attempt to uncover some context that lessens the blow to their reputation and insert this into conversation in their defense.

The best method of political activism for women is to keep a calendar of every event in support of your chosen candidate, and invite as many women in your circle as possible to attend them. Women manage the invitations for their households, and can therefore assure their husbands' presence if they attend; this opens the avenue for other women's husbands to be swayed into your candidate's court, thereby earning them more votes. On the other hand, all wives should take their position of authority over the family's social calendar very seriously, and scrutinize incoming invitations to determine the suitability of the candidate at hand. Do not allow your husband to attend events, rallies, or fundraisers for candidates that do not support their interests, particularly if your husband is the impressionable sort or your finances are not in a position to support campaign donations.

As a wife one must not expect to be asked for political opinions, but should your husband ask, dutifully report what you have learned from other women regarding the character of the various candidates. Most husbands will not seriously consider a women's opinion on policies or issues, but will trust them to be good judges of character, so index your opinions in this direction.
