Dear Mama and Papa,

I've just heard about the shipwreck. Where are you? Are you alive? Are you okay?

Zen and I are worried, Zen especially, she was crying earlier. Don't worry, if you can't write back I promise I'm going to take care of her, even when she's a pain. I hope you do write back.

Nico,

I miss you dearly. I would have written sooner, but between the shipwreck and other matters I have not been able to locate an owlery I deem trustworthy enough to deliver such an important letter. Remind Zenobia that it's not ladylike to cry in front of others, but be gentle in doing so—let her know that Papa and I will be home soon, and that all is well. I love you and your sister very much.

Dear Mama and Papa,

I'm very glad you're okay, Zen too. I can't wait to see you, I know there's not long now until summer but it seems like forever away.

I drew this for you. I drew it from memory and I'm still not as good at drawing people as I am animals, but I think it might be my best portrait yet.

[Tucked into the envelope is a sketch of Matilda and Dom. They'd both be smiling except Nico couldn't remember what Dom's face looks like when he does that so it's just Matilda smiling and Dom's mouth looks odd, like you can almost tell Nico tried to make him smile and then overcorrected it.]
