So There You Have It
#1
June 21, 1890 - Quin's Apartment, High Street, Hogsmeade

What did one do after one proposed marriage? In Percy’s case he typically found himself alone in his parlor with several glasses of whiskey, a good book, and Lily prancing around his chair as he attempted to drown himself in self pity. Which left the question of what did one do after one proposed marriage and the lady actually said yes? It was a new sensation for Percy, the elated sense of happiness that came from such an event. The novelty of such a situation brought Percy’s to Quin’s shop at the close business day and up to his friend’s apartment where they now sat comfortably with a drink in hand.

So there you have it. I’m to be a married man.” Percy finished relating to Quin all that had happened since last they spoke in the aftermath of Mrs. Goyle’s final disappearance from his life.

Percy showing up at the end of a work day was not new. Good news however was hard to come by for the pair of friends lately, so the announcement of some was certainly cause for a little celebration. Quin had a bottle of whiskey for just this reason upstairs and as soon as the shop was closed up he led the way up the back stairs to his flat.

Easing off his feet and into his favorite armchair Quin settled into Percy's retelling of the events leading up to his proposal to Miss Jennings. It took a fair amount of time, but his friend finally started to wind down and it had Quin nodding along with a grin on his face. "Well congratulations are in order then, third time's the charm?" He raised his glass in salute wondering if the third time would be the charm for him as well. Things with both Iona and Felicity had come to an end eventually and now thought he was starting to fall into the same pattern.

"I can't wait to meet her, I suspect you'll be moving to Irvingly then?" Quin supposed London was also a choice, but not so much Hogsmeade.

"It seems so." Percy chuckled, echoing Quin's salute with his own before taking a sip. Or was it the fourth time? He all but proposed to Mag-Mrs. Goyle that fateful night in February. Mentally he shook his head to shake the thoughts away from his mind. He may be a happily engaged man but the echoes of his past were still sharply painful.

"I think you'll like her very much when you meet her." Quin generally seemed to like everyone so Percy had little doubt on that matter.

"But, yes, it seems I will be looking for a place in Irvingly. I had hoped to let Cat move into father's house," While Percy had reluctantly moved into the Adlard's Hogsmeade home it had remained stubbornly his father's in his mind while his old house now rented to quidditch player and his lovely wife still seemed more home than the expensive home he had now settled into. It would be a relief to start somewhere new that was entirely his own. "But you know how stubborn she can be about such things." What he would do with the place if she didn't move in he wasn't sure. He wanted to have a place for Felicity to return to but he wouldn't mention that to Quin, not wishing to bring his mate to any further pain.

Instead he addressed another of the concerns that had come to mind since his conversation with Annabeth about the reality of their situation. "I don't know if I should look for a place on the muggle or magical side, if I'm being honest."

What a pair they were, honestly. At least Percy seemed happy with this turn of events, so Quin was happy for him. One of them deserved to settle and find happiness with somebody they cared for after all.

"I suspect we'll get along just fine. I was raised in the muggle world after all." Being a muggleborn had its ups and downs. People hated you for it, which seemed like no reason at all, but he had the best of both worlds really. "Ask her where she'd be more comfortable? Doesn't she live there already?" Quin was only piecing together bits of information he'd heard between Percy and Lis before she'd left. Not to mention, marriage was a two-person thing, decisions like that should probably be made together.

"Well mate, my cake-making skills are rusty, but I'd be happy to oblige if you so choose." Something little, he was terribly out of practice. "You actually ready for marriage?" According to society they both were, but in reality that was a different story.

Quincey had integrated himself so well into the magical world that there were times that Percy forgot he hadn't always been born into it. This had been one of those times. Of course Quin would understand Annabeth, Percy suspected he might understand more of her worries and fears then even Percy did.

"Of course, I should." He agreed, feeling like an idiot. He had already asked her between London and Irvingly, but he had not thought to press the matter further. He had rather, foolishly, hoped to look for a home or had one built her for her as a surprise. He admitted as much, "I had just hoped, perhaps to surprise her." Foolish really, his ears turned slightly red.

"I should be honored, but I suspect that is the bride's choice." Percy might not know much about weddings, but he had learned from Cat's that the less the groom got involved in the planning the better. Any time her husband to be had suggested something Cat had complained at length over the dinner table, their mother soothing over the matters in a way that Percy never could. For the first time in years he keenly felt the loss of his mother.

Quin's question surprised him and Percy took a moment to think about his answer before he said anything, buying time by taking long sip of his drink. "I don't know." He answered honestly. He had so long imagined marriage to one person and one alone that he had hardly considered what it would look like to marry someone else. "I do know that I am happy when I am around Annabeth and I want to be happy. The rest... I suppose I shall have to be ready for it." He shrugged but honestly he had no idea what the rest actually entailed not with out Magg - with her in the picture. It didn't help that he hadn't exactly anticipated Annabeth accepting his proposal.

Quin supposed he could see Percy's point. The man was far more of a romantic than Quin could claim himself to be, so it didn't surprise him. "I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out." The whole marriage partnership and who managed what wasn't something Quin had thought much of until Felicity and he had imagined theirs more on the even keel, but he supposed most marriage didn't work like that. Somebody was clearly in charge of something all the time and either the lady of the house would deal with it or her husband would. Quin saw himself more on the team in decision making.

"Of course," He chuckled. "Extend the offer, but no hard feelings whichever way." He was rusty after all, but had spent a good portion of his youth watching and helping his mother decorate and make cakes for all kinds of occasions.

When Quin had asked if Percy was ready, he'd expected more of a firm answer. Frankly this was the gent's third offer of something serious, so Quin assumed he was ready. Maybe the chase had taken its toll, but Percy's answer wasn't without merit either. "Good start then. My Ma always said the relationship builds the foundation for the rest of life." It could be wonderful or miserable, depending on how you and your spouse functioned together. "You'll figure it out." Quin was pretty certain Percy would make it work, make it stick this time.

I’ll be sure to let her know.” Percy agreed with a nod. He was sure there was a great deal more to consider to a wedding then a cake, but a cake and a cake maker were a good start.

Your mom’s words have some wisdom,” Percy chuckled, “Your’s leave a little to be desired.” He took a deep drink from his glass.

I suppose I’m still surprised at her answer, is all.” It was as close to the ugly truth as Percy felt he could get.

Quin echoed his friend's laugh with one of his own. "Ma's been married for a long, long time, I'd believe her over me." Not to mention he'd had about the same amount of bad luck that Percy had.

"May mate, you're doing better than I am." Percy had at least made it to the courting process with a couple of times, then a successful proposal. Quin had developed feelings along the way, Felicity had been the most serious, as good as courting really, without the official title. They'd had to be practical though, with no way to tell how long she'd be gone. Perhaps he'd just stay married to the store and call it while he was ahead.

Percy chuckled. “I think I shall.

Quin’s words were a reminder of Lissy and of everything that was in both Quin and Percy’s past. It had taken Percy some time to come around to the idea of his sister with his best friend, but he had grown accustomed to it. He hadn’t thought that Lissy caring for their relative would have changed that but it had and now Percy had no idea what to say on the matter.

To new beginnings, then. Percy toasted.
