October 25th, 1885 — A Small Cabin on the Carmichael Escape

Once, at least two decades ago, this had been a gamekeeper’s cabin, but magical families seldom had use for such a post and so it had long since fallen into disrepair. Now, it was one of many corners into which the debutante could be tucked on the three nights each month that she shifted into a most fearsome canine, close enough to the house for the journey to and from not to be arduous, but far enough away that sounds would alert neither staff nor neighbors to the unnatural presence in their midst.

It was here that she changed into her lupine form on the third and final night of October’s full moon, here where she had thrashed against her bonds and gnawed at the ragged furnishings finally to settle upon the drugged lamb shank that had been left to keep her company and fall into an uneasy slumber.

Here where her brown eyes opened, human again, to the sight of a very frightened housemaid standing in the doorway.

Camilla was usually not one to do things like this; but he was just so handsome! The new footman from the estate just down the way had very easily and very effectively flirted his way into getting Millie to meeting him in one of the abandoned outbuildings on the outskirts of the estate. It never failed to annoy her how the upper class could just let things like entire buildings go by the wayside and never give them another thought.

That was neither here nor there however, as Millie moved quietly along the dimly lit grounds, a pleasant ache to her body that she was growing accustomed to, but desperate to get back before too many people were up and questioning her whereabouts. Hearing a noise up ahead, Millie ducked into one of the other conveniently-placed outbuildings and closed the door behind her, turning briefly to catch her breath, only to find the familiar face of Miss Carmichael, looking pretty dire and- tied up? Millie started, stifling a scream, shocked to see one of the ladies of the house all the way out here and like this. Lost for words, she stood there, mouth agape, unable to formulate a sentence.

It was one of the housemaids. This was surely not good—how much had the young woman seen? For even if she had seen nothing remarkable, Virginia Carmichael, naked, in a glorified shed was something to write home about. The door she had opened let in the cool air from outside, causing the hairs on the back of Ginny’s neck to stand up—or was that the adrenaline.

Modesty was, for once, forgotten, the knowledge of what could happen steering her actions instead. Calmly, though shakily, she rose to her feet, one arm around her bosom and one hand covering other things. The movement was accompanied by the sound of the heavy chains she wore jingling in protest, though the one around her neck was now loser, having been crafted to her canine throat, not her human one.

Quietly she said, as carefully as she could, “Camilla, what are you doing down from the house at this hour? Surely you could at least offer me your cloak, rather than standing there gaping!”

For somebody who usually had a reply for everything, Millie did not know how to respond to Miss Carmichael's inquiry about her whereabouts this morning, but she did do as she was told and remove her cloak the other woman. "I um, are you quite alright, Miss Carmichael?" She asked, shivering just a bit thanks to her now-missing cloak.

Really, shackled in an abandoned outbuilding left a lot of questions on the tip of her tongue, but Camilla was still a little too shocked to push any of them out into the open. What in the name of Merlin's beard was this weirdness? Sure, she'd been the one off having a tryst with a footman, but this was a whole new level of strange!

Now loosely covered but still shackled, Virginia was at least somewhat protected from the elements, but no more protected from the dangers of the circumstnaces at hand.

“It has been a trying evening,” she offered as conversationally as she could. “If you could perhaps loose my bonds—the key is over on the mantel—I should be very happy indeed to explain my predicament.”

Perhaps one of her brothers would come before then and save her from the situation at hand. Ginny was not certain how long she could maintain her composure.

Still a bit in shock, it took Camilla a moment to really register what Miss Carmichael was asking and moved according to the directions in a bit of a daze. A trying evening? What on earth had landed the brunette in shackles?. Why?

After retrieving the key on the mantle, Millie unlocked the bonds on Miss Carmichael's wrists. It wasn't often that she was rendered speechless, but Millie honestly had no idea what to think. She had very little formal education and non of it magical, so she hadn't quite connected any of the possibilities. Apparently there was an explanation, but Mill still wasn't sure it would make any kind of sense.

"I, uh? Is there anything else you need?" Really, she just wanted to get the hell out of here and never think about this again.

Ginny absently rubbed her left wrist where the shackle had rubbed a bit too tightly against it before hastily adjusting the cloak to cover her properly. The witch knew that she was now in a position where she could take the upper hand, but violence was not in her nature. Were her wand not back at the house, Virginia would simply have obliviated her—desperate times and all that. Alas, magic was not feasible unless…

“Your wand,” she replied brightly. “I would very much appreciate your wand!” Merlin, was this really happening?

Camilla balked at the request for her wand. Why didn't she have her own? The maid worried her lip and clung to her own skirt, trying not to appear as outwardly uncomfortable as she felt. Slowly, she reached for her wand in the pocket of her skirt and held it out for Miss Carmichael. Whatever it was that was going on here, Millie just wanted to get out of here and go about her day- no handsome footman was worth this and potentially her job.

With her wand out of reach now, she she stumbled toward the door clumsily. "You can ah, keep that until later. I need to get back to the house." She reached for the door handle, trying to keep it from looking like a desperate attempt to get the hell out of there.

She was hasty. Too hasty. Ginny supposed she should not have expected any different given the peculiarity of the situation, but the maid’s anxious desire to depart set the witch’s own anxieties to blaze even stronger, and the resulting stunning spell hit the other woman perhaps a bit too hard.

Her head’s collision with the wall was certainly too hard, if the way she fell to the floor was any indication.

Or the pool of blood. The pool of blood was also a pretty good indication.

Shocked, Viriginia allowed the wand to fall from her hand, landing on the floor with a soft clatter. Tentatively, she took one step towards the fallen woman, then another, and another until at last she could crouch down beside her.

Heads were not supposed to bend at that angle, as far as Virginia knew.

Merlin help her. She had just killed the maid.
