Very specific lore question

So I have a question, and wasn't quite sure where to post it but i figured this place looked like a good place.

Does the Gambling Act of 1845 also apply to the Wizarding world? Would the Ministry have passed something similar, or do they have their own version of the a gambling law? Or do they have any at all?
How normal is betting on Quidditch?

I'm not sure how the staff handles gambling from a "lore" perspective, but there are a few points that I can offer as contribution?

  1. We have the Irvingly Casino located in the muggle-magical village of Irvingly nearby Hogsmeade! Because of this, I doubt gambling is strictly illegal, but whether it's unenforceable by law is unclear. The establishment could deem it "thievery" if you place a bet and refuse to divvy up when you lose, but I'm not sure how law enforcement would treat that.
  2. Magic exists, and there are magical ways to make deals binding that don't include the law. Unbreakable vows, magical contracts—whatever your mind can think up. Even if bets can't be enforced by law, there are definitely magical means to enforce deals that two characters might make!
  3. Characters on Charming have dealt with unfortunate consequences as a result of making bets they never lived up to their end on, so the same could be assumed for other characters.

The muggle government isn't involved with the day-to-day doings in the magical world on Charming, and between 1877 and 1887, there was no communication between the muggle and magical governments at all. It would be hard to enforce muggle laws on magical people that are, for all intents and purposes, "in hiding" from muggles.

The staff have final say, definitely, but these are just my thoughts ^^

Usually we have muggle laws as being observed, but I'm not 100% on this one specifically! I'll toss this at Kayte so you can have an answer.

I am here to echo/confirm all of this! I would consider any gambling taking place at a casino to be contractual (I am in a gambling establishment so it is breach of promise for me not to carry through on my end) with the Ministry not caring enough to get involved otherwise.

Thank you guys!

What about gambling that's not casino gambling? Such as betting on sports matches like quidditch and such? Is that treated much the same as not something the Ministry cares enough about to get involved?

Correct! They've both been quite prevalent on-board in the past (better for some characters than others :P).
