Come one, come all-- Basil Foxwood & Gus Lissington have decided to host a joint class for all their courses to change things up a little. This will be run as a series of normal class threads with both Basil and Gus awarding house points throughout while the students complete tasks and cause chaos, as applicable. A few notes:
- The lesson plan focuses on foundational skills in both subjects while emphasizing teamwork.
- Safety Briefing: It is assumed Basil and Gus will discuss the importance of staying within designated areas, respecting magical creatures, and avoiding unnecessary risks. Doing so, or not, will warrant house point awards and deductions (and possibly detentions.)
- Students will be grouped randomly to encourage collaboration (chose your own partner/s, at will).
- Spin off threads are encouraged and may warrant a pop-in post from Basil or Gus (please tag us, we're bad at stalking)! +5 house points to each character in the spin off thread, once completed.
- Objective 1) To develop basic transfiguration skills and apply them in a practical setting.
- Objective 2) To introduce fundamental defensive techniques against magical creatures and environmental challenges.
- IC, this happens mid-term sometime, once the first years have had a chance to learn something beyond theory. OOC, this will stay open through the end of December at which point all threads will receive final points and be wrapped, complete or not.
TASK:
- Students may use their transfiguration & DADA skills to adapt to environmental challenges, such as shielding against cold or finding a means to an end.
- Professors will be observing and assessing coordination, creativity, and spellwork to assign additional house points.
- Obstacles and the like will be randomly mentioned throughout threads as they develop but feel free to be creative and take these threads in whatever direction you like! We won't be monitoring continuing obstacles so be creative to make up your own and try to earn those extra HPs.
INTRODUCTORY LEVELS (1-2): Thread located here.
Task Details: Introductory flags are rather easy to spot, spread as they are across the expansive Hogwarts Grounds. The least flighty, these flags are hard to reach and may require transfiguration of simple, small objects into more useful things, or defending against common incidents.
- Location 1: The Owlery, tied to the leg of a nasty barn owl near the top. Find a way to lure him down and not get bitten as you retrieve this flag.
- Location 2: The Courtyard, tucked away between two shifty-looking stones in one of the archways that won't budge too convincingly and are easily offended.
- Location 3: The Olde Wishing Well, some few feet down from the surface which will require ingenuity. (Has this always been here? Will it be here tomorrow? Unknown.) The well is enchanted such that students cannot fall in.
OWL STUDENTS (3-5): Thread located here.
Task Details: OWL flags are situated on a platform in the middle of the Black Lake. Students are discouraged from going for a swim, and the result of such shenanigans may result in deductions or detentions. Students may need to (read: will need to) defend against minor creatures (e.g., Bowtruckles or Grindylows near the lake) using simple DADA spells like the Knockback Jinx (Flipendo) or the Shield Charm (Protego) etc.
NEWT STUDENTS (6-7): Thread located here.
Task Details: NEWT flags have been placed somewhere in the labyrinth of the Forbidden Forest. Obstacles include finding the thing, retaining a hold of the slippery, sneaky flags, and managing to do so first while also encountering magical creatures (mostly simulated by a professor or an enchanted object) that requires quick thinking. (I.e. Students may need to transfigure an object into a decoy or distraction while another partner casts a defensive spell to protect them both.)
