VI. A Conversational Sinkhole
#1
August 23rd, 1894 — [Aunt's] Residence, Swallowbury, Irvingly

It was, of sorts, a celebration. Hadrian had been taken by the sinkhole in Padmore Park and then released, quite decidedly alive. This last, Eury was given to understand, was something of an anomally, with such accidents in this region typically causing more... carnage than the most recent. Aunt Ismene had invited the Notts and the Harts to dinner to celebrate, and while Aunt Atalanta and her eldest children had had to send their apologies, many of the rest had arrived.

(It would have been rather lacklustre, had Hadrian failed to attend.)

Sat beside Titus and across from her sister and the Man Of The Hour™, Eurydice had done her best to smile and nod but largely remain removed from the conversation. Once chatter inevitably turned to the sinkhole, however, she felt as though she had to offer something to the conversation.

"There are myriad useful holes, one might find. Keyholes, for example."

Heavens above.

Eury was not even certain what she had been trying to say, but knew as well as she knew her own name and the sound of her sister's voice (blissfully free of her own affect) that it was not that.

Hadrian thought it quite excellent that his Lovegood cousins had come to Scotland all the way from India, where he had met them last, a few years ago – it was impeccable timing of them, or it proved the pleasant feeling that the whole world was as good as his home.

And family were a receptive (captive) audience indeed, to tell his death-defying tales of the sinkhole, and field all their questions with great panache – although he suspected Titus was already tired of this topic of conversation.

It was fortunate for his brother, then, that cousin Eurydice managed to find the most unexpected angle upon which to comment – Hadrian, mid-sip of his wine, almost expelled some through his nose as he choked on it in a sudden, helpless bout of laughter. “Oh, keyholes, naturally,” Hadrian agreed, half-bemused and half-convinced she was doing a bit. “And have you developed a – special interest in useful holes, Eurydice?”
