Edgar Minks vs. Jules Wright
#1
July 24th, 1892 — Headquarters of the London Society for the Practice of Combative Magic

Charles didn't think either of the two men stood before him looked like expert duelists, probably they'd scrawled their names in the wrong column when signing up. It was probably a good thing these two dunces were getting a recap of the rules. Mr. Minks, you're up first.

Edgar was pleased at winning his first match, to his mind proving to everybody he was somebody to reckon with. He was now determined to continue his winning streak and win the tournament. He may not have gained top marks in his NEWTS or been born into Upper-Class society but he was just as good if not better than all of them, especially those not pure in blood.

When the rules were once again repeated he gave a tired expression towards the wizard overseeing his match. Did the idiot think they forgot about the rules in such a short time? Was that a look of disdain on his face? A part of Edgar was tempted to purposely misaim his spell and put a stinging hex right between Macmillan's eyes. Deciding he rather win the tournament than get disqualified just to appease his ego, Edgar focused instead on his opponent.

He recognized his opponent from Hogwarts, a snotty mudblood from Gryffindor, somebody Edgar will enjoy beating. Once he finished performing the niceties Edgar focused on his opening attack. With a quick flick of his wand he fired the very spell he had been tempted to cast at the referee, aiming a stinging hex right at Jules' face.

Jules took a deep breathe to gain his focus. He had won the first match, but he wasn't completely sure if that had been his skill or mostly luck. Deciding that it had to be his skill he took proper stance. After hearing the rules again, Jules bowed to his opponent.

Just like with his match, Jules recognized his opponent from his time at Hogwarts. But he didn't have any fond memories of their time together.

Edgar Minks was a proud pure blood and one of those people who thought that being a muggleborn meant you were less somehow. Oh, how Jules would enjoy beating his ass.

Instead of defensive, Jules decided that today he would take the offensive. Let's taint his face like he thinks my blood is tainted, he thought as he flicked his wand, aiming a hex at his face that would engorge his skull.

Charles grimaced as Minks' head began to swell rather horrifically, his own spell having been missed its target by several feet. A part of him was tempted to wait the spell out and see which would happen first - the spell wearing off or the man's head exploding. Unfortunately it wouldn't do to risk the man dying when he'd be found negligent.

With reluctance he reversed the spell. Mr. Wright takes the first round and may begin the next.

Jules chuckled at the sight of his opponent's growing head. Serves him right. Jules thought, feeling almost disappointed when the referee reversed the spell. Jules was surprised at his aggressive behavior and this side of him that Edgar Minks was able to bring up.

Anyhow, apparently this offensive strategy is working, Jules thought as he readied himself again. This time he had to begin and he raised his wand.

Maybe he sees the world better upside down, Jules thought. Immediately after he cast the dangling jinx, screaming "Levicorpus!", as he flicked his wand, sending a green light towards his opponent.

The pressure and pain he felt as his head started to enlarge nearly set Edgar into a panic. Once Wright's spell had been dispelled by MacMillan he felt relief of course but what he felt the most as anger. There was no way he was going to let the filthy Mudblood get away with such a nasty spell.

With his mind focused on revenge he didn't bother with any defensive spells, instead barely a moment after Wright started casting his spell, Edgar fired off a nasty curse designed to cause hundreds of nasty foul smelling and painful boils to break out all over him, should it succeed.

The duel took a sudden, ugly turn.

Evidently Mr. Minks hadn't appreciated the assault upon his head because his retaliation was not only aggressive it was whiplash fast. So fast that Mr. Wright's spell ended up aimed at his own eye instead of his opponent, his arm having moved by reflex at the sudden pain brought on by Minks' spell and he'd seemed to jab his own eye with the tip of his wand. Charles couldn't tell whether the spell had been a dud to start with or if the disruption had upset it but all he observed were bright sparks firing at Mr. Wright's eye. It probably wasn't the best thing for his eye but it was likely better than what had been in store for Mr. Minks. Mr. Wright was now not only covered in angry boils but had an eye injury to contend with as well and the whole scene was rather pathetic in Charles' opinion so he put an end to the boils quickly. The eye was beyond his juridiction, he was no healer.

Mr. Minks, please begin the final round when Mr. Wright has... righted himself. Probably he ought to halt the duel and let Wright seek medical attention but this was an expert rank duel and it would only be a few more minutes anyway.

Seeing his spell effectively cover Jules with boils was emensely satisfying to Edgar. The fact Jules ended up poking his own eye with his wand was just icing on the cake. Edgar couldn't hide the brief look of satisfaction on his face before he schooled it into one of concern.

"Take what time you need to get yourself sorted," Edgar said graciously to Jules. As much as he couldn't care less what state Jules was in when he finished him off in the last round Edgar did have a reputation to maintain. He didn't come to the competition as Leon afterall. Then again if he was dueling as Leon he wouldn't be doing it in front of witnesses.

Once Jules was ready to resume the duel, Edgar took his place, already knowing what his opening spell would be. Confident now and once more in control of his temper, Edgar fired off his next spell, this one less aggressive but should prove just as effective. He cast the paralizing spell, hoping to be too fast in his casting to allow Jules time to cast his own spell.

Jules eye was burning with a pain he had not often felt before. Being a curse breaker he had to deal with some nasty curses before, resulting in quite some injuries. He had never taken a spell directly to the eye however, and Jules was almost incapacitated by the pain.

Jules tried to focus one last time, knowing that after this round the duel would be over. And especially after taking the hit to the eye and seeing the smug face of Edgar Minks, Jules desperately wanted to win.

"Let's do this." Jules grunted as he raised his wand, squinting his bad eye.

Aiming with only one good eye would be tricky and Jules was afraid he would be too slow. So instead of offensive, Jules once again decided to play defensive and returned to one of his signature spells.

"Protego!"

At this point in the day shield charms were rather uninspired and overdone in Charles' opinion. However he had to hand it to Mr. Wright that casting it with one eye closed made it fractionally more impressive and skillful, that it bested his fully-sighted opponent would've decided the duel if it hadn't already been a clean cut conclusion. The duel goes to Mr. Wright!
