Gus Lissington vs. Edgar Minks
#1
July 24th, 1892 — Headquarters of the London Society for the Practice of Combative Magic

It seldom surprised people that Fitz Prewett was involved with combative magic—he had that sort of reckless reputation that was not hindered by his brief imprisonment for creaothceann, in which someone had died. That he was involved in an organized group did, however, come as a mild surprise, particularly to those still baffled he held down a Ministry job.

But he was a member, and as he was not participating today—he and Camilla were preparing to host in the countryside and Fitz had been loath to turn green or grow a slug head or whatever—had been tapped to moderate some bouts. Fortunately, Fitz Prewett had never lacked for showmanship.

"Today," the wizard announced broadly after going rather swiftly through the rules, "we have the Professor—" he gestured to Lissington "against the man of business," and this time, to Minks. A betting man, of course, would have placed his galleons upon Lissington, but Minks was enough of an unknown entity in the wizard's estimation that even if Fitz could have honourably placed a wager on the bout, he would have refrained.

"Professor Lissington, you may begin!"

Professor. He nearly wrinkled his nose. Gus still wasn't sure how he felt about the title attached to his name, but he supposed that was another thought for another time. Instead he turned his attention toward the man in front of him and offered a brilliant smile because of course no matter the outcome, he was going to enjoy himself.

Then he curled his fingers around his wand and wordlessly cast entomorphis in hopes of forcing his opponent to crawl around like an insect for a few moments.

The titles used in the announcement of the duel participants didn't phase Edgar. He didn't care if his opponent was the Minister of Magic himself, he'll fight just as viciously as he would against some nobody. The way he saw it, this was a chance to prove he was something far more than just a 'businessman' and one didn't need a big fancy education with Outstanding NEWTS in every subject to achieve something.

He bowed towards Gus as appropriate but he didn't put much effort into it. Edgar was far more focused on the first spell he intended to cast than worrying about the niceties of a duel.

Edgar could never manage non-verbal spells so had no idea what spell Gus was preparing to cast. He didn't make any attempt to be non-verbal in his attack, shouting out the words for a stinging hex, aiming for Gus's wand arm, hoping to force him to drop his wand before he could complete whatever spell he was planning to use.

"The first point to Mr. Minks!" Fitzory announced, not bothering to keep the surprise from his tone. He did not know what the professor had endeavoured to do, but his aim had been stymied by a quick-fire, and effective, stinging hex.

Fitz gestured to Minks to begin the next pass.

Edgar couldn't stop the smirk which crossed his face when his hex scored a direct hit and whatever spell Gus had been trying to send his way went wide. He wanted to follow up with more disabling curse but knew the rules of the dueling tournament bid him to wait till the judge completed the scoring on the first round.

As soon as he was free to resume the duel, Edgar wasted no time in casting a paralyzing curse.

Gus Lissington

This time around, Gus grinned at Edgar as he began. As he watched the man cast something, Gus flicked his own wand to cast a mirror charm in hopes of sending Edgar's spell right back at him.

Was Minks particularly good, or Lissington just ill-suited to his profession? Regardless, the winner of the bout was clear.

"Mr. Minks is the winner," Fitz announced rather superfluously, "and will proceed to the next round of the tournament. Well done to you both, gentlemen."
