Her thank you made him a little uncomfortable, although he couldn't entirely pinpoint why, and Sirius shrugged his shoulders at her. "You're welcome," he said, equally solemn. He let that hang in the air for a second before he followed it up with, "Do you think you can get down by yourself now?" He wasn't convinced that she could, but maybe she would manage to surprise him.

Yes, she replied quickly. She sounded far more confident than she felt. Hesper sensed a hint of awkwardness but she wasn't sure whether it was of her own making or his, perhaps it was both? Don't tell anyone. After a beat she remembered her manners and tacked on, Please. There was another pause before she spoke again. My great aunt forbid me from flying. Not that she thought it would ever get out if he mentioned it to friends, as it was their group thought she could fly already anyway; she was more concerned that he'd tell people she was terrible at it.

His first instinct was to tell her no, or to poke fun at her, but Sirius shoved it down and gave her a sheepish grin. "Alright, I won't," he said. And then, on impulse: "But if you decide to try again, you have to tell me first." He was pretty sure he was in agreement with her great aunt, though — Hesper wasn't meant to be in the air.

She felt a small ripple of relief at the sound of his agreement, and then he continued speaking and she shot him a quizzical look. What was it to him if and when she flew again? Of all the requests, why that? He could've asked her for a favor - not that she could think of anything she could do that he couldn't do himself - or simply declared that she owed him one. Why that? She wanted to get better if not for the sake of not embarrassing herself in front of the others in their project group, then to prove to him that she could fly at least half decently but she didn't want him watching her practice! She wanted to demand a reason for his request but the thought that asking might lead to him changing his mind ensured her mouth stayed firmly closed on the matter. All right... For a moment she almost asked 'why' anyway. Thank you.
