Reconciliation Part I

He wasn't sure what she wanted him to say. Did she expect him to understand how his mind worked? He wasn't a psychiatrist, and he wasn't sure that even a psychiatrist could figure out what had initially made things awkward. It was so long ago, too!

"I think it was weird because we'd never had a disagreement. And, I don't know, maybe my feelings were hurt? I can't remember, Sloane." How could he explain that in a way that didn't sound pathetic? They were friends one moment, and the next he felt afraid to talk to her. Then, after the rest of the summer without talking, he hadn't been sure how to start again, so he... didn't.

"You didn't do anything wrong." Wrong in that sense at least. He'd been sensitive to whatever she'd said, and he'd taken it personally. "I don't know what to say, but I'm worried that you'll just walk away again if I can't give you the answer you want. I just wish we could go back and be friends again." There. That was as close to the truth as he was willing to give without trying to discern months of awkwardness and hurt.

Sloane was torn between accepting what he said at face value and moving on. She desperately wanted to move on, to go back to being friends; to spending time together without it being awkward or weird. On the other hand, she still thought he wasn't be honest with her. What disagreement? Because she hadn't wanted to take divination with him? Really?

The whole thing was so frustrating. She was over it. Time to make a choice and get on with it.

"I don't even know what disagreement you're talking about. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, but you have to promise me from here on out that you'll just tell me when I'm being a brat and that I need to knock it off." Seriously, she couldn't fix it if he didn't tell her. If she took the teasing too far or was being obnoxious for whatever reason. Sloane didn't remember anything getting out of hand that day on High Street, but he had seemed off by the end of it and then had started the year of supreme awkwardness.

Perching herself back on the edge of the bed, she settled in against the rail and watched him quietly for a minute. "Better?"

Cameron opened his mouth to disagree with her once more, but thought better of it. With a deep breath, he folded his arms across his chest and nodded. He didn't need to fight with her anymore. She was here, and they were going to be friends again as long as he didn't do or say anything stupid.

He managed a smile as she perched herself on the edge of his bed and nudged her with his good foot.

"Better," he agreed. "I only have one condition: you have to visit me every afternoon right after dinner. One of the Hufflepuffs told me she tries to give kids pureed food for dinner, and I'd rather die."

She noticed he didn't really answer her, but instead changed the subject. Ugh. She didn't want to continue to fight, so she simply chose to let it go. It was alright for now, but she wouldn't be able to do it forever.

"I don't think that's true, but I can try. Just let me know what to smuggle out." Sloane shook her head and chuckled. Then again, it would be really funny if she did. She was just uncertain enough to wait one night and see if it was true. Plus it would certainly be funny. "How long did she say you'll be in here for?"

Cammie smiled. It might not be better forever, but it was better for now, and that was what he needed. At least he would have regular company that wasn't Maddy's scolding and homework help from Sisse or Moony. It would still be a while until he got out, though, and in the meantime he'd have to find some way to occupy his time.

"She said it could be a while," he admitted with a frown. "Weeks, maybe. One of legs was crushed, and I have a handful of other fractures. Ribs, mostly. I also sprained my ankle." There was probably more, too, but he couldn't be bothered to focus on it, because that meant more pain.

"I told her I had to be better by the next game. She said she'd have to see." A deeper frown.

Sloane grimaced appropriately at the sheer amount of injuries he'd managed to sustain. She'd very clearly seen his leg, but hadn't realized that anything else had really been broken. "Yikes, well. You probably want to take it seriously. You'll only re-injure yourself if you come back too soon." Of course playing without him wasn't great either, but she'd heard over and over and over from her father that it was better to let an injury heal completely before getting back in the saddle. Otherwise the risk to get hurt again was exponentially higher.

"Plus it sounds like you're completely broken, so I don't see how it's possible." She stuck her tongue out just a little to prove she was only teasing.

Eyes widening ever so slightly, Cammie gave gave Sloane an exasperated look. Clearly she could see the flaws with her otherwise flawless logic. "But we have the match on the seventh," he reminded. It was the last of the year, and they needed to win it if they had any chance of winning the house cup! It was a month away, but it would be at least a week or two before the nurse let him go, and maybe a week or two after that before he was cleared to play. He needed to get better, and fast.

"I'd rather tape my leg to my broomstick and hope it doesn't fall off than not play at all," he said, dead serious. Sure, flying typically required its players to be in physically good shape, but playing with a broken chaser was better than playing without one!

Sloane could easily see where Cam was coming from; she would be exactly the same in his position but on the other hand she had plenty of experience with listening to her father and not listening to him and finding out he was right all along so. "I'm just telling you what my dad tells me, and I think he knows what he's talking about." She shrugged nonchalantly. Sloane still kind of felt like she was teetering on the edge and wasn't really sure how far to push it.

Cam was Cam and he was going to do what he wanted and there wasn't much she could really do about it. "Just don't make it worse, would be terrible to ruin your career at fourteen." She leaned back on both hands on the bed and rolled her head to the side to look at him. It was the epitome of the do what you want expression and she wasn't going to try too hard to convince him otherwise.

Sloane could listen to her dad all she wanted, but Cameron knew he had to play on the 7th. If that meant limping to the quidditch pitch, so be it! Besides, he'd never heard of a wizard being permanently crippled from a few little breaks. He'd have to suffer worse damage than that.

"It won't be ruined. I promise," he insisted with an air of innocence that suggested he planned on following her. He'd be better. She'd see.

It was then that the nursed rushed in, yapping at another student who walked alongside her. With wide eyes Cammie turned to look at Sloane and motioned for her to get off his bed. The last thing he needed was another scolding! "I'll see you soon," he said quickly, sincerely. He did want to see her again, hopefully without all the bickering.
