First Year Jitters, AKA WHERE AM I?

Septemer 3rd, 1888 — Location

Adrien had gone through a heavy case of culture shock, having learned just last month that magic was... actually a thing. Despite having read the books that the professor had left him, he was not prepared for what would soon face him. Inundated by elitist and, oddly in some cases racist bullies, he found himself after classes taking refuge in the library, surrounded by textbooks.

The Ruskin sisters were all raised to know of magic. Perhaps the biggest reminder was their longer teeth than most. Even when they weren't allowed to preform magic, they still had their parentage as a constant reminder that magic was quite real. And so was the judgement. The whispers. Even from the witches and wizards, she could still hear the 'did you hear what her mother is?' and more foul comments. So when she saw other students getting teased, she couldn't help but want to... well... help. And seeing a young first year get teased in the hallway before entering the library made her feel an urge to talk to him. Sitting across from him, she gave a kind smile. "Hello."

Adrien snapped out of his rut when he heard someone address him. "Oh! Hello!" He was slightly surprised to see someone actually... pleasant. And not trying to steal the book he was reading. His grey eyes studied the girl for a moment before he smiled saying, "I am Adrien Blackthorne. May I ask your name?"

It saddened her to see the surprise that she was familiar with. One that says 'goodness, a nice person talking to me?'. No one should feel like that. Glad to see him smile, she smiled back. "I am Acacia Ruskin, and am also a Ravenclaw."

"I..erm... Sorry... Not used to talking to people. You look like you may be what, a fifth year? This is my first year here." He said, looking like a lost awkward kitten. He set down the book, memorizing the page number. The book itself is titled, 'A Magical History for Muggleborns.'

"Sixth, actually." Should be in seventh, she thought to herself. But she didn't really let that show. Glancing at the book, she tilted her head. "I'm not sure I've seen this one before. New?" She asked.

"More like it was thrust at me by a robed stranger along with a letter to come to school." He said, laughing softly. The book does not seem to have an author's name. "So... Do you play Quidditch? I have been reading about the sport and it interests me. I may join the flying club."

#8
Interesting. Well, who knows what sort of books muggleborns got. "No. I'm not very interested in that sort of thing. I like art though."

"Closest thing I know to art, is iron working. My pa is a blacksmith. I would have started learning to make steel in a couple years if it wasn't for the letter."

"That sounds interesting. And it can certainly be viewed as a form of art. Anything can, really. If you had the right eyes for it. But I mostly stick to painting and drawing." Never music, certainly. She was never really one with a talent for music. Which was quite sad, given what was expected of her as a young lady of society.

"I also write. Having lived a rather normal life, I wrote and read as a way to escape." He said, taking on a distant look as epic battles raged in his head. "Wait, are dragons real?!" He asked, excitedly as he sat bolt upright.

A glimmer entered her eyes. "I enjoy writing. I'm actually writing a book." Though it had sort of slowed down since she got back to school. And she had left her work at home over summer when visiting her friends, not knowing how long she would really be gone.

"Oh yes, quite. Very dangerous, but very real." She gave a pointed look at the first year at the words 'very dangerous'. In a way that said 'don't get any ideas'. It would do anyone any good if he ran off to chase dragons around like some make-believe knight. "So are werewolves, vampires, and merfolk. Though merfolk are not nearly as kind as stories would have you believe."

"Well the merfolk I know of seduce you and devour you. SO......" He very obviously was still stuck on, the dragons are real part.
"How do you guys keep dragons from you know..... burning down entire nations?"

Nodding slightly at that comment, it was fairly accurate. Though the language was dreadful. "Mostly distance from known habitats. Other than that, spell work tends to keep them away. Hogwarts is hidden by magic." Something that will also be learned with time at school. But having a head start never hurt anyone. As long as they weren't being foolish.

"So vampires, are any of the many legends accurate?" He asked, leaning forwards to rest his elbows on the table, framing his face with his hands.

And there it was. The vampire question. At least he hadn't made any accusations... yet. "Depends on what legend you hear. They don't die the instant they walk into the sunlight, but they do get very easily sunburnt. They will die if they stay out for hours though. They do need blood to survive, and are pale and have long canine teeth. Most legends seem to say that they cannot have children, which is certainly not true. Like the parent, the children are often discriminated against by society." She tried to keep her face at least neutral, if not kind. But it was fairly hard considering how sensitive the topic was to her. And thus she couldn't help but be self-conscious about her own teeth.
