February 18th, 1889 — Hogwarts: Before Classes

Crystal was, surprisingly, excited for the Daily Prophet today. It meant that, maybe, she could do something good when she graduated. The job Orinda had suggested late last year, Crystal being a lawyer, could be possible. Maybe not specifically to vampires, werewolves, half-breeds, and the sort, but towards those who where fully human... well, it got her hopes up. And, for once, she would really like it if nobody crushed them before the first class of the day.

"Acacia! Did you read the new papers today?" Who was she kidding? Of course her sister had read the papers.

@'Acacia Ruskin'

The Daily Prophet was an interesting read for Acacia. A lawyer defending a vampire. A vampire actually being defended. It seemed like hope for non-humans, and possibly their children. Maybe that meant hope for a better life.

"I did. An interesting development. Do you think she's innocent?" She didn't know what was going through Chrysanata's head, so didn't know what the right question to ask her sister was.

Crystal was saddened by her sister's lack of excitement. Maybe Acacaia just wasn't as excited as she was. "Does it matter? A vampire is being defended by a human!"

She felt hopeful for the idea of vampires becoming more accepted than they had been before. If vampires were accepted, there wouldn't be a reason for their offspring to be discriminated against anymore. It meant so much more for their future.

Of course that was the wrong question. Chrysanta was always a hard one to read. So of course any question would likely be the wrong one. Perhaps Acacia should ask Miss Whitledge for some advise about the blonde Ruskin. But that would have to wait. "That is wonderful news. It's always good when humans see past stereotypes and try to find the truth."

What worried Acacia was that if the vampire wasn't innocent, that this could backfire on their kind completely. A 'cautionary tale'. Nothing more. But it didn't seem that Chrysanta was open to hearing such thoughts at the moment.

Crystal could almost read her sister's expression, and she felt her heart sink. What if Acacia didn't think that the vampire was innocent? Or what would happen if the vampire wasn't innocent? Would that cause setbacks for the half-vampires? or any half-breed? She frowned in thought.

"What would happen if the lawyer failed?" she meant it in a way, that even if the vampire was innocent, that nobody would believe she was. Full vampires either killed or turned others, and there wasn't a middle ground. What if they decided to condemn the vampire anyway?

If Chrysanta had uttered the statement about how there was no middle ground, Acacia would have corrected her. There technically was... according to what she had learned in school. If there was only a little bit of blood drained, it sounded like nothing happened. Though vampires didn't tend to just take a little unless they were interrupted. That was the Ravenclaw in her after all, to try and have all of the facts. "I'm not sure, Chrysanta." And she wasn't really sure. She could only guess.

The Slytherin frowned at her older sister's words, though she knew they were true. Nobody would really know the truth, even when the “truth” came out. Whatever was published in the Daily Prophet about the vampire would have to be taken with a grain of salt. She let out a sigh. It would do her no good to think over things that she'd never know the real answer to.

Acacia sighed, knowing all too well how frustrating this situation was. "An actual lawyer willingly took up her case. I'm sure that is progress in and of itself."

Crystal let out another sigh. "I know," she mumbled. "I just wish we would know the truth instead of something that is written by biassed people."

"Perhaps you can be a journalist. Seek the real truth." Acacia could see Chrysanta being a journalist. She could see several good career paths for her sister, if the Slytherin chose to work towards those goals.

Being a lawyer or journalist. Either one sounded interesting, but Crystal wasn't sure she was ready to make career choices quiet yet.  No matter how annoying she found the 'staying behind a year because of something she didn't ask for', she was mildly grateful for the extra year to decide what she really wanted to be.

"Whatever I choose for a career... Hopefully it is one that helps people."

Acacia has known what she's wanted to be since around third year or so. Helping others, and what helped more than being a healer? It made Acacia smile when she heard what her sister said. Helping others, perhaps a family thing. "I'm sure you will."
