Whatever the weather - OWL level charms class

19th February 1895 - Charms classroom

Third to fifth year charms class

Professor Bowen waited in the charms classroom as the OWL students filed in and took their seats. She stood with her back to the board leaning gently against the wall. A small dark thunderstorm no larger than two quaffles stacked on top of each other rumbled along slowly on her desk, every so often crackling with small flashes of lightning.

Isla stood upright and walked over to the board as the hopped to attention and floated up to wait for her. Good morning everyone, I hope you are all well, I quite enjoyed watching all your performances in the duels so well done those that took part. It was good to see lots of students confident enough to use their magic in the competition, particularly when there was quite a technical disparity between the bottom and top of their year category.

With a gesture from the professor, the chalk floated up and wrote the words Atmospheric Charm on the board.

”The atmospheric charm allows us to create weather effects contained within a small space, such as this little storm that some of you might have noticed. Can anyone tell me what are some of the practical applications of such a spell?” She asked lifting her head to wait for some answers the classroom as she walked around the room placing wand movement diagrams in front of each student based on their year group.

”Third and Fourth years will be casting mist and rain respectively. Fifth years shall be casting thunderstorms, you each have a small square of copper that will help to encourage your storm to stay on your desk.

The thunder form is quite advanced so younger students please do not be tempted to try it until I have checked your technique on the previous forms. Please begin”

The pages in front of each student had a diagram of the wand form selected for their age and the specific incantation required for each form of the spell. It also had notes regarding the spell. The professor would move around the room demonstrating and answering any questions.

Please add the following code to your first post, situations may or may not come up where it matters in this thread, but it will also be used to build a long term opinion of each student by the professor. Also let me know if you want anything specific for your student.

Yuri slouched in his seat, arms crossed as the rest of the students filed in. Charms had its moments, and Professor Bowen didn’t tend to waste time on fluff. His muddy brown eyes flicked toward the storm rumbling on her desk, and he raised an eyebrow. That was interesting. And more importantly—potentially useful. A charm like that could cause a lot of mischief in the right hands.

He straightened up a little as Professor Bowen spoke. He wasn’t surprised at the mention of technical disparity. Some students in duels hurled hexes like seasoned duelists, while others had barely managed a shield charm before getting knocked on their backsides.

At the professor’s question about practical applications, he was thinking about it. Small storms could be useful for distractions, or even subtle warnings. A well-placed clap of thunder could spook someone at just the right moment. He didn’t say any of this aloud, though.

When Professor Bowen handed out the wand movement diagrams, Yuri glanced at his, eyes scanning the instructions. Thunderstorms, then. Rolling his shoulders, he gripped his wand and gave the movement a few slow practice runs, feeling out the arc. Then, on his third attempt, he muttered the incantation under his breath and flicked his wand just so.

Kitty's eyes widened at the storm on her professor's desk as she entered the Charms classroom. She ought to be used to seeing such things, but even half way through her third year she kept finding magic that surprised her.

Sliding into her seat she leaned forward and listened intently to Professor Bowen. She doubted she'd have any real application of this when she returned to her dull drum life back home, but how handy such things would be to know.

Eagerly Kitty flipped through her pages until she found the mist spell. She could find a way to cloak herself in the forest with such a spell, her parents wouldn't be able to find her then. Or she could terrify her sisters. Well at least she could once she turned seventeen. At least it gave her plenty of time to practice - and to pretend that by the time she was seventeen she wouldn't have lost her access to the world of magic and returned to a dully muggle life where she would always be the odd one out.

With the right spell in front of her Kitty focused and attempted to cast a mist spell.

The glee on Anne's face should have scared everyone. Ironically, she usually stormed around like a thundercloud and here she was nearly giddy at the thought of making her own. Anne's hand shot up before the instructions were finished. "Professor Bowen, what if we want a violent thunderstorm? I want lightning!" As if Anne needed to know how to conjure electricity. Anne didn't bother to add the wand movements to her notes, she traced them in the air with her hand, this form of visualization always better for her memory.

Without hesitation, and little actual preparation, Anne raised her wand and cast the charm.

The professor walked around the classics as the students began their incantations. "I suspect you do Miss Moony, a gentle rolling storm is the aim, done right. You shall be rewarded with little bolts of lightning." she nodded and glanced across towards Mr. Podsnapper who seemed to be having a little delay in getting the magic to follow his instructions, but there was the beginnings of little cloud starting to form. She walked towards him to help with his wand movements, the luscious bank of mist that rolled from the table of Miss Arundell and across the floor parted around her dress.

"Exceptional work Miss Arundell, five points to Hufflepuff"

She looked at the little cloud that Yuri had so far summoned and held her wand to demonstrate the correct movements weaving her hand in the pattern but not casting the spell, he was very close, a couple more tries should get it.

There was crack of thunder from across the room as Miss Moony also managed to get her storm going, the copper was mostly doing it job of catching the bolts of lightning but perhaps Miss Moony got a little too close to admire her work and one of the little metal clips on her robe had gotten the attention of the storm and zap. A storm this size was unlikely to do much beyond a little shock and maybe throw her hair into a smoking frizz so Isla allowed herself little polite personal mirth at the enthusiastic slytherin before speaking "That is quite the mischievous storm you have their Miss Moony, well done, but perhaps a little more care is needed? Are you ok?"

Violetta watched as the other students cast their spells before casting her own. A practical use for the spell, she couldn't really see it, perhaps being able to cast a cloud to help you know how to uncast one and brighten up a cloudy day. She gazed out the window at the clouds there, she wasn't not listening. but she was distracted by thinking about the future, and her current confusing present, and studying for her exams, that was exhausting her.

She heard the little crack of lighting and quickly cleared her own head ready to cast her spell on the table in front of her. With Rose de Minuit in hand she waved the wand and flicked it out, hoping to see a small thundercloud appear over her copper plate.
