Regards the Thestrals, what exactly counts as witnessing death the wiki doesn't specify a threshold but do animals count? Specifically for Benedict living and working the holidays in a pet shop with various animals would be fairly accepting of the fact that sometimes things die and probably have been around dead animals at various times.
What counts as "witnessing death"

Dead =/= death; has to physically see the moment of death I think is a good, clear requirement!
However I know there has been some chatter in the past around whether you have to remember it and cannot recall the conclusion (are infants and the obliviated "in" or "out" of Club Thestral?) and have never thought about animals before.

I have always interpreted it as being seeing death in the sense that you see and understand, perhaps for the first time, the moment of mortality. So, if you're a baby and someone happens to die in a room you are also present in then no, you have not 'seen' death. I take 'seeing' to mean not just physically seeing it but understanding the magnitude of the moment and absorbing that into your heart and soul as you see someone else's heart and soul cease to be. You've always been aware that death is a thing but now you have seen it for yourself and thus you are also able to see the spooky death birds.
Personally I don't extend that to animals because, while upsetting, it doesn't change the fabric of who you are when they die.

I second Lauren's take on this and would personally exclude animals from this – I think it hits home more when it's a member of your own species.
The wiki page has a lot on Harry not seeing the thestrals despite being present as a baby when his parents died, which could just be authorial inconsistency re: thestrals being an invention in her later books, but I like the idea of it being more "grasping" the concept of death as well as seeing it happen before your eyes.

Yeah, the acceptance of death part to me makes you think you need to remember it and have processed it, rather than just being told it happened so I personally wouldn't count a baby or obliviated either.
I was leaning towards not including animals, or perhaps only including ones you have emotional attachments too as my own head canon like family pet>random farm animal

I’m also in the school of excluding animals and agree with Lauren/MJ!
