What he can be to YOUR Character
Samuel is in a great position to bring a little bit of drama, conflict and mystery to the people around him, without being evil or cruel in the classical sense.
Maybe due to being a forever DM for ttrpgs, I am not squeamish or precious about my characters. I am happy to play what is needed to move the plot, if it fits with Samuels general concept!
Story Hooks -- for students and faculty of Hogwarts:
Characteristics as a teacher:
authoritarian | demanding | unconventional | appreciative of students who invest in his subject
authoritarian | demanding | unconventional | appreciative of students who invest in his subject
- Samuel is the Alchemy Professor. That means he only teaches a select handful of students at newt-level. To those, he can potentially become a very close contact and a source of great support. If a student applies themselves in his subject and if they get along on a personal level, he will push for them to succeed not only in his class but also after they leave Hogwarts.
- If your student is at odds with him for whatever reason, he is predestined to play a Severus Snape-like figure. He's not quite as malicious of a bully but he is heavy-handed with punishments and WILL make your life hell until you show him the appropriate amount of respect. He also does not forget a slight easily and knows how to hold a grudge.
- Colleagues: Samuel seeks to get on the good side of other faculty and will make a round of introductions.
- Due to his small number of classes, he volunteers to assist the faculty with other tasks: overseeing study hours, guarding corridors, etc. He also offers tutoring in potions, transfiguration, and ancient runes (the three tenets of Alchemy) if the professor of the subject does not wish to tutor the lacking student themselves.
- He might sooner or later get up to dangerous, unethical or forbidden experiments in his laboratory at Hogwarts and employ unknowing teachers to gather materials. This storyline is open to development.
Story Hooks -- for everyone else:
Friends:
- dubious connections: Samuel spent nearly two decades abroad in Europe. As a reckless young man, he kept company that would have scandalized his family. Being free from the constraints of polite London society can make a young man imprudent. From this time, any kind of connection with any sort of class status can resurface.
- appropriate company: Back in his home country, he cleaned up his act and sought to keep friends that were of his status and higher. Although he makes exceptions regarding class status for people he feels sympathetic towards or knows from his school days.
Samuel is unattached, and his family very much wishes for him to settle down and marry. So far, he has avoided the circuit of balls and events, but with his new secure work position, he might run out of reasons to deny invitations.
This area is open for development. Feel free to contact me if you have ideas.
He is somewhere on the bisexual spectrum (like all my characters, because I am), although you would need to use Veritaserum to get him to confess to this publicly.
Family:
He has two so far mostly undeveloped brothers (45 +) who work in the ministry / st Mungos.
There is also a much younger sister (late teens or early twenties) that is up for grabs, if anyone is interested.
The Griffiths used to be a pureblood line, but fell out of favour because Mr. Edmund Griffith married a muggle. There are other lines related to the Griffiths that are likely pureblood and upperclass or middleclass. They probably don't keep close contact.
