Quick facts about Samuel

43 years old | half blood | unattached | Alchemy Professor at Hogwarts | Slytherin

What he can be to YOUR Character

Samuel is in a great position to bring a little bit of drama, conflict and mystery to the people around him, without being evil or cruel in the classical sense.
Maybe due to being a forever DM for ttrpgs, I am not squeamish or precious about my characters. I am happy to play what is needed to move the plot, if it fits with Samuels general concept!

Story Hooks -- for students and faculty of Hogwarts:

Characteristics as a teacher:

authoritarian | demanding | unconventional | appreciative of students who invest in his subject

  • Samuel is the Alchemy Professor. That means he only teaches a select handful of students at newt-level. To those, he can potentially become a very close contact and a source of great support. If a student applies themselves in his subject and if they get along on a personal level, he will push for them to succeed not only in his class but also after they leave Hogwarts.
  • If your student is at odds with him for whatever reason, he is predestined to play a Severus Snape-like figure. He's not quite as malicious of a bully but he is heavy-handed with punishments and WILL make your life hell until you show him the appropriate amount of respect. He also does not forget a slight easily and knows how to hold a grudge.
  • Colleagues: Samuel seeks to get on the good side of other faculty and will make a round of introductions.
  • Due to his small number of classes, he volunteers to assist the faculty with other tasks: overseeing study hours, guarding corridors, etc. He also offers tutoring in potions, transfiguration, and ancient runes (the three tenets of Alchemy) if the professor of the subject does not wish to tutor the lacking student themselves.
  • He might sooner or later get up to dangerous, unethical or forbidden experiments in his laboratory at Hogwarts and employ unknowing teachers to gather materials. This storyline is open to development.

Story Hooks -- for everyone else:

Friends:
  • dubious connections: Samuel spent nearly two decades abroad in Europe. As a reckless young man, he kept company that would have scandalized his family. Being free from the constraints of polite London society can make a young man imprudent. From this time, any kind of connection with any sort of class status can resurface.
  • appropriate company: Back in his home country, he cleaned up his act and sought to keep friends that were of his status and higher. Although he makes exceptions regarding class status for people he feels sympathetic towards or knows from his school days.

Romantic:
Samuel is unattached, and his family very much wishes for him to settle down and marry. So far, he has avoided the circuit of balls and events, but with his new secure work position, he might run out of reasons to deny invitations.
This area is open for development. Feel free to contact me if you have ideas.
He is somewhere on the bisexual spectrum (like all my characters, because I am), although you would need to use Veritaserum to get him to confess to this publicly.

Family:
He has two so far mostly undeveloped brothers (45 +) who work in the ministry / st Mungos.
There is also a much younger sister (late teens or early twenties) that is up for grabs, if anyone is interested.
The Griffiths used to be a pureblood line, but fell out of favour because Mr. Edmund Griffith married a muggle. There are other lines related to the Griffiths that are likely pureblood and upperclass or middleclass. They probably don't keep close contact.

Welcome to the board Samuel Griffith

Your character looks interesting, plenty of story hooks.

From what I have,

Ignatius Prince is the ancient Runes professor at Hogwarts, he could certainly do with more stories, he has also travelled a lot as a cursebreaker so can share tales of an evening.

For students I have

Benedict Hunter who is about to get his OWL results. Alchemy is one of the courses I am considering for him to take but I'm not decided yet.

Violetta DeCroix is my European (french) she is a very sweet but quite snobby young slytherin going into fifth year. Depending on his personality she might look up to him as an UC slytherin professor.

Bonnie Greyback and Margaret Wallace are going into their third and first years respectively but I doubt at this point there would be much connection other than "just another professor"

Look forward to writing together.

Romance wise I have none which would fit him unfortunately.

Hello and welcome to Charming!

Right now, my main hook would be Millie Potts, who is entering her 5th year this fall and will be taking her OWLs in spring. If Samuel is looking for students to tutor, she might catch his eye. Her Transfiguration scores are near the top, and she does well enough in Ancient Runes. It's Potions where she's still below her level (I keep her grades on my profile, btw, if you want to look). So if he's scouting for Alchemy potentials and offered her tutoring, Millie has a personal incentive to accept an arrangement like that.

Currently, I think of 3 specific characters I have, though they are inactive for now unless enough interest is there for them.

01. Amarantha Valenduris is the granddaughter of the potion's professor. She graduated and debuted this year, but she was the president of the potion's club and a star student in alchemy. She also had a very secret dark arts club that she ran. Her speciality is poisons and the darker side of magic, though she denies it all.

02. Dorian Rosier is currently in half mourning so idk how interesting he'll be for a while, but he will be in his final year in September. Also, a brilliant potions and alchemy student. Beauxbatons teaches alchemy early so it was expected for Dorian to self study it since childhood. That being said, he's a bit advanced for his level, and studies at the Flint Institute during the summer. He's the type to pile so much work on himself he induces a panic attack, but he has very high ambitions.

03. Nataliya Vulchanova is a descendant of the family that founded the Durmstrang Institute, and former Head Girl, so she's nothing to sneeze at. If he was teaching in 1890, he'd know her as one of his alchemy students. She's got an intense, sordid family history and tends to have a haunted, gaunt look about her. But, she really does try to be proper and sweet. Though she can be morbid.

Winston Umbra is the Ghoul Studies professor and an eccentric weirdo. He is well-meaning and sweet though but a bit 'head in the clouds'. Think Luna Lovegood but a Victorian Man.

None of my students take Alchemy but my NEWT aged ones are Nicodemus Dursley, Paxton Fudge.

And Leander Hobday was Slytherin prefect and just graduated! Alcyone Slughorn also just graduated.

For students, I have Abraxas Crabbe in Alchemy (also Hufflepuff prefect!). He's an engaged student in lessons and quite capable, but has been a bit adrift this past year. For hogwarts staff, I have Elenora Brierley. Not sure what she'd make of him!

Student wise I have Chuntao Chang who is a rising 3rd year. I'm not sure how he'd feel about alchemy but obviously has a few years to figure it out lol.
Staff wise I play the DADA professor Gus here, who is almost like an overgrown child. I'm not sure how well they'd get on, but Gus sure would try.

Thank you everyone who replied! I am thinking some casual introductions and meetings are in order to get started and set the tone, and then we can take it from there and see what fun can be had with some plotlines.
So if any of you have capacity for an easy thread, feel free to let me know (maybe via by DM?) and we can get sth started.

Reading his profile, I do see a few situations where they'd butt heads and have very different opinions and manners. They could be great .. frenemies?

Since his speciality of alchemy is all about magical materials and needs a lot of creature parts like blood, feathers, hair etc. he would be eager to leave a good impression with Prof. Brierley!
I hope to see Abraxas in the classroom then, once the new years starts Smile

They should get acquainted! I wasn't aware of the subject Ghoul studies, it sounds rad

I like these character descriptions a lot. One could bump into each other in Hogsmeade, or at an event in town?

He is indeed interested to scout talents for his class, since its offered only when the demand suffices. That could make an useful arrangement. If her family has sufficient connections, he can also be persuaded to tutor students in preparation for the coming year.

Especially Ignatius would be interesting and I'd be delighted to see Benedict in Alchemy class.
Samuel lived many years in Paris, so he and Miss Decroix could have a chat in french Smile

Hurling options of very different varieties: Willa Kensington is a marriageable lady, Emrys Selwyn is a bi man around his age. (I am also in the "most of my characters are some shade of bi because I am" camp xD)

Reuben Crouch is the Hogwarts flight instructor and will be active again in the fall so that's another connection. He also spent a lot of time in his youth in dubious crowds in Europe if they had any overlap (though his dubious crowds were the "sex and drugs" variety not the "black market" variety, not sure where Samuel was).

Charles Whymper will be a sixth year in the fall and may take Alchemy. I haven't quite decided yet, but he's an overachiever, so quite possibly. XD

< Harry here is a potential professional contact? He's a potioneer, and a very experimental one at that, so is arguably professionally ~adjacent!

The Alchemist circle in Prague where Sam was an apprentice was quite sordid and had a lot of overlap with the wizarding offshoot of the new occultist movement of the time. And those guys were wild! And Sam was too, in the passions of youth.
He kept similar contacts in Paris. They might well have had a run-in when Reuben was just entering the scene and Sam was about to leave it. That could be fun!

Samuel spends much time in London this summer, dissolving his Alchemist Laboratories and selling (or secretly trying to get rid of) valuable and perplexing things that could be of interest to a potioneer, especially an experimental one Smile He's welcome to stop by.

Hope to see Charles in Alchemy class! Overachieving will serve him well, since underachieving in this class draws the wrath of Prof. Griffith haha

Hello and welcome to our little corner of the internet!

The only connection I can offer is a potentially romantically inclined match with Mina here. Miss Bain is on her third season (would have been her fourth had her mother not sent her to a finishing school in Paris for a year), and rather desperate for a match. She might be pureblood but she's not purist, at least herself, and I feel her parents are desperate enough to find her a match that they wouldn't mind Samuel's family history as much as if it was direct.

Mina herself is rather intellectual and competitive; she was in Ravenclaw House during her tenure at Hogwarts, and has a notable temper that she tries to keep reigned in in public. She's also rather impulsive.

A very belated welcome to Charming!! :D

I think the main person I have that might fit the bill most is Louisa Clearwater who's the Gryffindor House Matron. She's very no nonsense and very much thinks she's cursed since all of her fiancés/love interests have died thus far. I'm 100% down for hurling her at Sam!

I unfortunately do not have any other Hogwarts people to throw at you but I wish I did!

WELCOME TO CHARMING, SHE SAYS, LATE!!! I think dubious potioneer connections with Noble Greengrass would make the most sense from my crew !

I have a a few:

Angelica Selwyn is the former Arithmancy professor and now married to Emrys Selwyn. She's from ambitious, old money European purebloods. She was in Russia for the duration of her first marriage and would have been familiar in potions/alchemy elite circles through her husband 1878-1880. She came back to England in 1884. Both then and now, she has both a knack for and experience in darker magic and poisons. With her marriage a mess, it would not be difficult to get her back into darker research.

Anne Moony is going into her fifth year and already plans on taking alchemy. She's a working class halfblood and is determined to move up in the world with ambition and brains. She would already be seeking him out to improve her understanding of alchemy. She's generally respectful, if overly enthusiastic in class. She hates being babied and expects to be pushed. Impressing people she considers intelligent is still important to her.

Hermia Bonaccord is from a historic pureblood family. She's the daughter of a French diplomat. She took and loved Alchemy at Hogwarts and is now doing advanced studies at Flint Institute. She is always down for advanced research.

Themis Lyra dm'ed you about her, but Themis is a year above Sam in school and is now a colleague. We can figure out if they get along.
