Appearance: Standing at 5’4 inches Helena was willowy and angular in her youth but age and pregnancies have given her roundness and filled out her figure considerably. Dressed impeccably, if simply and usually in a hue that looks black in the right light, she cuts a dignified, stoic figure in society and is the sort of woman of whom it is said she was a great beauty in her youth. With grey-blue eyes and long, glossy black hair Helena is strongly built if ghostly pale, usually in good health and will not admit that her eyesight is going.

History:
1837: Born to the wealthy and prestigious Pendergast family Helena wants for nothing but company from the moment she is born. Her brothers barely notice her existence for the first few years of her life, partly because they were at Hogwarts but also because she was closeted away with nannies for so many years her parents barely did either.

1844: After an epic bout of sulking Helena glares at the floral wallpaper in her bedroom for so long that it begins to peel off itself. Her first sign of magic is met with delight by her put-upon governess and mild irritation by the housemaids who realise they’ll have to put it back up somehow. By this time Philip has graduated from Hogwarts and begins spending an hour or so a day in his sister’s company; they bond. Only slightly. But still.

1846: Reuben graduates from Hogwarts and follows Philip’s example. They do not bond quite so easily and many things are thrown until Philip intervenes and distracts Helena with amusing books to keep her occupied.

1849: At last it is Helena’s turn to attend school and after a very brief spell under the hat she is declared a Ravenclaw and almost immediately makes the acquaintance of Lucy Carrow, a girl with a similar background and though the bonds of school never last into adulthood they will remain lifelong friends.

1853-1856: Helena is made prefect and then Head Girl in her final year. The same year she is told about her betrothal to John Macmillan.

1856: After a short acquaintance, when is happy to discover than John Macmillan is neither old nor ugly, the two are married and Helena finds herself expecting their first child before years end.

1857: Edward is born. Helena has never known love like it and is immediately eager to have more even if Edward does cry whenever she comes near him and can only be calmed by the nanny. She develops a dislike for the woman who can calm her son so easily that never truly goes away.

1860: It takes several years of trying, during which Helena and John's relationship develops from being fond of each other out of necessity to something much more like love, but eventually they have their second child, Charles. He is a tricky pregnancy, nothing like her smooth, easy first, and cries almost continuously, so much so that even the nanny cannot calm him. Helena is secretly pleased.

1861: Almost immediately Helena finds herself with child again and gives birth to Howard the following year.

1863: Elmer is born. No one knows how ridiculous he will grow up to be yet so they are ecstatic. With a husband that loves her and four happy sons in the nursery Helena is overwhelmed with happiness.

1864: Which makes the sting even worse when Howard unexpectedly catches a fever and dies. Helena and John are devastated beyond words but manage to rally together.

1866: Still feeling the sting of grief there is a glimpse of light in the form of Lawrence, another son, sadly born with weak lungs that cause Helena endless anxiety for the next two years.

1868: Lawrence dies. Any happiness they had managed to claw back vanished overnight and Helena sinks into a deep depression, only making any effort towards interaction for the sake of her remaining sons.

1869: Edward heads off to Hogwarts and Helena bitterly resents that this isn't the worst pain she will ever feel in regards to one of her sons being away from her.

1871: Charles attends school. The following year Helena tries to pretend her tears are for her sons going back to school and not that 1872 would have been the year Howard attended. She likes to think he would have been a Ravenclaw like her.

1874: Elmer attends Hogwarts. With his departure Helena barely even bothers to leave her rooms and begins using morphine to sleep.

1877: Though reluctant to enter into society unless she absolutely has to Helena lets John talk her into moving to Hogsmeade with many others. The couple are distant. The boys finish their school. Life rambles on.

1883: Much to her astonishment Charles announces his engagement to Miss Noelle Selwyn, the daughter of one of Helena's oldest friends, Katharina. Upon discussing the matter the two women struggle to pinpoint quite why their children have formed an attachment to one another but they are tentatively quite pleased about the development. In the summer before the wedding Helena inadvertently takes too much morphine and spends a fortnight in bed. After that she begins to avoid it.

1884: Charles and Noelle have a daughter in the summer and Helena becomes a grandmother. For the first time in years she feels some joy and her granddaughter is the apple of her eyes.

1885: Noelle dies. Helena can't claim to have liked the girl overmuch but she is devastated for Kath and once again returns to morphine. It affects her terribly again and she is once again laid up in bed for a week. The fire that ravages through Hogsmeade leads to the Macmillans relocating permanently to their estate.

1886: Elmer goes to South America with his equally ridiculous friend. Helena worries and misses him terribly.

1887: Elmer returns. Olivia dies and, on a whim, Helena buys her house.

Personality: Though melancholy has been Helena's closest companion for many years underneath there is still a kind and caring woman capable of feeling much more than she is able to express. Following the death of her sons she was never able to truly recover and feels like this is a failing when she compares herself to other mothers who managed to carry on - as such she feels unworthy of her husband's patience and is wary of loving her living sons too much, though she can hardly help it. Helena has suffered with depression for most of her adult life and self-medicated for almost as long; between bouts she is loving and affectionate, charming and funny, but is never able to sustain it for long before the black dog rises again.

Other:
+ Quickly develops girlcrushes on women in high-powered jobs, largely because she wishes she could have achieved something like that herself.
+ Loves Ellory and Minnie like they're her own. Is fond of her other nieces and nephews.
+ Suffers with clinical depression.
