I need you to know I rolled my eyes so hard they very nearly popped out of my head and laughed so hard I'm sure I tore a stitch in my new dress. I will be sending you an invoice from my tailor. Thank you kindly for the gifts, of course, you are right that this pales in comparison to the Swiss chocolate I usually send you, but I haven't had sweets in so long that I was more delighted than bothered. As for the book, I cannot wait to begin to read it - perhaps after my lessons today. Yes, we're allowed to receive gifts, provided they are from approved family members, which you are, of course. That being said, if you send me anything inappropriate or gross or something I don't like for other reasons, I might actually kill you.

Rosier? Have I been demoted to my surname now? I thought I was your favorite cousin! Still, I'm glad I could get you to laugh on your birthday, even if it means I have to pay for your tailor to fix your dress. Next time I will see if I can import some Swiss chocolate just to send to you even though it will cost a ridiculous amount and my father will not be too happy about it - you know you're so hard to please, I pity the man who marries you. Let me know what you think of the fourth chapter when you get there, I was thinking when I come in June we could attempt something in there together since it's probably not too hard for a couple of amateur alchemists. And there's no need for threats, I would never send you anything that wasn't completely up to regulation. You might be to soft to really kill me but Narcissus sure isn't.
You're so touchy, you know that? And it's awfully bold of you to assume you're my favorite cousin, considering you're the cousin I see the least, besides your brother, of course. No matter, I thank you again for your gifts and I will pretend you didn't say what you did about my future husband for the sake of our friendship. First off, I'm not too soft to kill you so don't get comfortable, second, Narcissus wouldn't care if I walked off a bridge unless it somehow affected his reputation so I think you're good there.

I'm not touchy, you're just rude. Anyway, you not seeing me as often is exactly why I'm your favorite; it's like a special treat. I'd visit more but alas, some of us stayed in school. Of course I'm going to read into you saying you're looking forward to my visit, especially when you tell me not to. Such as, confirming for me that I'm your favorite, for instance. I'm looking forward to seeing what we create as well, though perhaps I'm not as optimistic as you are; Monsieur Flamel is a legend and we're only a couple of amateurs. Nevertheless, your enthusiasm is always a treat, even when it's violent enthusiasm. I doubt that's true about your brother; he loves you, he just has a lot of important things to worry about. You wouldn't understand.
I'm only rude to you. That's not fair! I wanted to stay in school, it's not my fault my mother thinks it's more important for me to learn curtsies and dinner party etiquette. Nevertheless, I am ignoring your desperation to be my favorite and just saying I look forward to having you here only because it means I can blame all accidents caused by potion explosions on you. And what is it about Narcissus that I wouldn't understand? You think I don't get that he's the heir so daddy puts pressure on him? I get that. I just think he's being an ass for acting like it's a huge burden when he's got four siblings who could've gotten that honor and didn't.

Oh, so that's what this is about? This whole thing is about you being a cranky feminist as per usual. Woe is you, you don't have to think about a career, you get to flit around and flirt and twirl in fancy dresses and have every wealthy suitor in a hundred mile radius throwing themselves at you. How could the world be so cruel? Heaven forbid you get to sit around and take tea and cakes while the rest of us have to try not to run our father's reputations and businesses into the ground. Be grateful you don't have to deal with the same things that Narcissus does. I'm not saying you aren't capable of it, you know I don't discredit your intelligence, Elise, but it's not something you wish for. I bet he'd do anything to have the kind of privileges you have where the most complicated thing you'll ever need to accomplish is convince a man to marry you.
You’re an ass, you know that? I thought you of all people would understand how much I hate when my future is reduced down to being some airheaded debutante. Maybe I want to have the kind of pressure you hate so much! Maybe I want to be challenged! Maybe I’m bored of taking tea and cakes as you so arrogantly put it. If you want to call giving you a reality check being an ass - also you ought to watch your language, it's not proper. I'm not trying to reduce you to anything, Elise, I'm merely pointing out that you have no clue what kind of pressure the rest of us are under and you say all that, you want to be challenged, but if you were actually put into the situation you would be begging to be back in your cushy little finishing school. I'm not sure there's point in arguing with you when you're emotional like this, but you will do something meaningful, even if you do what you're supposed to do and get married and have children and all of that.
