Appearance: Gilly has dirty-blonde hair (not dirty blonde hair, as she tries to keep herself clean as possible) that she attempts to keep in the most fashionable styles. She typically wears the nicest robes and dresses she can afford, which means they typically are found somewhere in the trash or stitched together out of other discarded fabrics. She has one really nice dress that she takes good care of, and when she gets her Hogwarts robes from the first-year scholarship, she will obsess over keeping them neat, tidy, and wearing them properly.
Gilly has brown eyes and usually keeps her face as clean as she can, though given her position she does end up with some dirt on her every now and again. Her wand hand is her right hand, and she's pretty average in terms of weight, though she is a little skinnier and more sickly looking than a girl her age who might be able to afford to eat regularly.
History:
1877: Jane-Anne Padgett moves to Hogsmeade after the death of her aunt, the sole remaining relative she has. Being that she only attended a year at Hogwarts, job opportunities aren't much and she ends up shuffling around from job to job, a few times stepping into prostitution when her stomach is particularly empty.
1882: Antoinette and Gilbertine are born to Jane-Anne, who gives them some fancy names to make up for their lifestyle as well as naming them after the night sky they were born under. Their father unknown, Jane-Anne ends up having to work harder and occasionally leave the babies by themselves for a few hours. After one such occasion, Jane-Anne finds Antoinette dead when she returns, and begins drinking to cope with her death.
1885: Cassander is born as a result of another somewhat unplanned liaison between Jane-Anne and an unknown man and named for the river he is born by. Gilly as a toddler recognizes that something is different, but doesn't generally do much. Occasionally she is the one responsible for feeding Cassander when their mother passes out.
1886: Endecott is born just outside of an apothecary and named for an herb that Jane-Anne consumed to stop some excess bleeding. Having already known what it is like to have a younger brother, Gilly just assumes she will be helping out with this one, as well.
1887: Gilly starts working, performing menial tasks like shining shoes. Once or twice she does a little dance and receives a few knuts for it, though she determines almost immediately that this makes her feel ridiculous and does her best to avoid any type of work like that.
1888: Avalynn is born. Again due to their mother's general unreliable behavior, Gilly takes some responsibility, though she also relies a little on Cassander to help her with little tasks or watching when both Gilly and their mother are unavailable.
1889: At age 7 Gilly's first accidental magic happens, which is good for her because she realizes that she can't imagine not being able to do the magic she's seen on the streets before. Also because once she learns some charms, she can help out some more.
1890: Marena is born. At this point Gilly is feeling a bit overwhelmed being in charge of her siblings, but at least Cassander and Endecott are getting older, too, so she doesn't have to watch them as much and they can even bring in a little money for food, too!
1891: As Gilly gets older, it seems like her mother loses more and more of herself. This is especially noticeable when she barges into the shack that the Padgett family lives in and demands that the children get out of her home, having no apparent memory of who they are. In the morning she apologizes, but to Gilly it's just another sign that Jane-Anne can't be trusted.
1893: Ryatt is born and named by his siblings, which is really quite a bad idea because Marena insists that he be named 'Puddle' and Gilly only gets far enough to say it's a middle name and not a first name. The others argue between Ryan and Wyatt and eventually compromise with a combined name of Ryatt. Gilly worries about how her siblings will do when she's at Hogwarts and can't make money for them, and begins setting up some back-up plans and saving money.
Personality: Gilly is much more responsible than many would think, mostly from having to care for her younger siblings and herself when their mother is not around. She daydreams of living a better life and of dragging her and her siblings out of the slums of Hogsmeade. She wishes she were like the fancy upper-class women she sees with their hats and new dresses.
Gilly is known for being a bit of a social chameleon, trying her best to fit into whatever role she wants or needs to perform, though at her core she is someone who just wants more for her siblings and herself, as well as any other children like her. She struggles with making the tough choices for her family, and worries about the amount of time she will spend at Hogwarts.
One of Gilly's master plans to get money is to marry someone rich, and so she will likely aspire to befriend people with good connections so that she can help herself up even if she doesn't actually like them. This includes both middle class and upper class people.
Other: Gilly has started to realize that she has at times developed crushes on both male and female people, but is hiding this from almost everyone.
Sample Roleplay Post: Gilly tripped over one of the uneven stones of the road, and fumbled with the items she carried in her arms. An apple smashed into the road and Gilly swore. That was supposed to be her breakfast. She picked up the bits that were still edible and stuffed them into her mouth, looking at the path she was walking on more closely. If she dropped anything else, the littler ones wouldn't be eating, and that couldn't be good for them.
She didn't notice that she'd also dropped one of the books she had just bought with the scholarship money for her upcoming first year at Hogwarts, an etiquette textbook that promised manners to even the most wretched and dirty of street urchins, which Gilly at the very least considered herself to be above. She was just too focused on making sure the food got home in one piece.
