Emrys had to work to keep from flinching at her response. His face remained mostly neutral, but his jaw tightened. She was already emotionally invested in the idea of a child. He wasn't, and didn't think he ever would be, but that wasn't something he could explain to her. He could say the words, but she wouldn't hear them any more than she'd heard any of his other confessions. She might think he was lying, putting on some sort of strange bravado to convince her of something. Worse, she might think he believed himself, but was too inexperienced or naive to know himself. She'd said something along those lines when he'd told her about his attraction to men, and she seemed to be under the impression that with enough of the other pieces in place she could eventually convince him it wasn't true after all. Maybe she would think that once the child was a reality he'd be attached to it and invested in its future. Maybe he would be — he obviously had no prior experience with the matter — but he rather doubted it.
He also rather doubted that all would be well, but this wasn't the time to bring that up.
