It was her debut! A night when she was the glittering star attraction! how very exciting! The Hogwarts coming out ball had been a pale shadow by comparison. Given how disdainful her sister had been of her own debut she had been rather expecting the affair to have gone off like a damp squib but her dance card had been full, the atmosphere was vibrant and infectious, and the prospect of a glowing season lay ahead of her. This was the sort of night where dreams were forged
The theme she had chosen was celestial, moons, stars, suns and planets in orbits - magical orreries and starlike lanterns glittered over head, moving and dancing to a tempo that had little to do with the music from the band that was playing for the assembled company. The tables were festooned with fruit and flowers, sweet treats and savories and champagne and drinks were flowing. She was sure this would count as a shimmering debute in the season - an excellent start to her public life if she did say so herself.
Her gown, although still in the traditional debutantes white was peppered over with tiny pearls in the shape of stars and moons, her hair had been arranged in a waterfall of curls and more of the pearls stood proud against her chestnut hair. She had always rather felt the ugly duckling next to Porphyria, whose looks were always so much more dramatic than her own, but tonight she felt rather pretty, even if she was expected to trot around the room like a show pony.
Mister Morgan, a man only a few years older than herself, was her next stop, coming face to face and exchanging the usual pleasantries, she was rather surprised at his open compliment. Few men were so daring, so brazen. Her father and brothers had told her had looked pretty but that didn't count! Her first real compliment from a real gentleman! Her stomach swooped with excitement. 'thank you Mister Morgan' she beamed, delighted and taking little real care to hide it. 'I'm most flattered, and that you chose to attend this evening' Belle added quickly, adjusting her hair self consciously, and rolling on her heels. 'Are you enjoying your evening?' Belle mused, 'I do hope my debut passes social muster?'
