I hope that this letter finds you well, for "well" is what I wish you, in spite of the fact that I know this is not the news you wished to receive.

I have decided, after a great deal of consideration and consultation with both my brother and aunt, to honour my engagement to Mr. Macnair. As such, you will no doubt conclude, I must decline your offer. As per our arrangement, I did give you a fortnight to make your case, but whatever you have said, it was not enough to sway either party to your side. Whatever my personal feelings, I must make the most prudent choice, as marriage is an irrevocable decision.

There is no doubt in my mind that you shall swiftly find a woman who is as good a match for you as you are for her. It is unfortunate that that could not prove the case in our own situation. I shall not tell anyone that you extended to me an offer, as I would not wish my declination to hinder your chances at a successful union.
