Dear Ari,
It might be presumptuous of me to write, and you may have already gotten some word from your wife, but it occurred to me that if Zelda were out on a rescue mission like this and I were back at home I don't know whether it would ever occur to her to write me. Obviously I know she cares, but she just gets so wrapped up in her work, especially if there's a crisis, so — in case Dionisia is the same way, which I feel as though she might be, I thought perhaps you'd appreciate a letter.
She's doing very well. I mean that in the physical safety sense but also in terms of her work. She's got a few new scrapes and bruises from helping people when they're panicking (this is fairly typical in these sorts of scenarios; I was taught not to get close enough to touch anyone who thinks they might be drowning, because they get so desperate they might pull you under too just while they're trying to hold on to something) but she is perfectly sound and healthy otherwise, and she never seems daunted by how panicked people are — just keeps charging in and helping them through. She saved a man's life the first night we were out. We found him in the water and he should have been gone already, and he'd swallowed too much of it and I was sure he was only a moment or two from passing on. She got the water out of his lungs and somehow got his heart beating again, and yesterday he walked off the brow in Portugal. He's probably back home with his family by now, and if it wasn't for Dionisia he would have been dead.
I just thought perhaps you'd like to know.
