It was rare for Zelda to be so utterly at a loss when she was at work. She had seen dead bodies, broken spells, stopped buildings from tearing themselves apart, been thrown down the street by a troll - she was good at her job. But curses did not pull her wand out of her hand, curses did not seep into an entire boat - curses were not supposed to be this old, and this nasty.

What if she was too late to save him?

She didn't move, still stuck, while Alfred got her wand. Nor did she really move when he slid it back into her hand and his fingers grazed against her - she wanted to reach out and grab him. She wanted for things to be as they had been that afternoon she went to his flat - when he just held her, and for that moment Zelda had believed that things would be alright. It was really his eyes meeting hers that broke her from her shock; she had not actually looked him in the eyes the entire time they had been on the boat.

Zelda swallowed.

"I need - I need you to be alright," she said, and immediately wished that she had not, eyes widening again. If he didn't care about her anymore, if he was just doing this because he felt bad - then, well, she had just come up with another new way to embarrass herself. But his boat was extremely fucking cursed, and it was the truth.
