In hindsight it was somewhat inevitable that Eva’s response would be thoughtful and measured but that didn’t make the words any less soothing. She had endured Phineas’ utter indifference and Ursula shrieking like a silly chit in a penny dreadful novel – really, they were as bad as one another in many ways – so to hear from this particular woman’s lips the reassurance that she was not entirely ruined was more than acceptable. If Elladora had been the sort of woman to admit to such things she might even have gone so far as saying she had been hoping for Evalina’s particular brand of flattery.
She had certainly been hoping for her brand of flirting.
“Is that what I should do?” She asked quietly, turning her body towards the other woman to lean her elbow on the back of the chaise, hoping the relief wasn’t too evident in her entire being that she had not been deemed lesser. “Fix my imperfections with gold?”
Elladora took a sip of her brandy, eyes flashing dark and mirthful. “Some would claim there is not sufficient gold in the world,” she licked a drop of brandy from where it fell from her lips. “And you my dear could never be improved upon, gold or not.”
