Appearance: No one has ever not noticed when Nathaniel steps into a room. From clean leather shoes to neatly trimmed blond hair, the wizard stands at a whopping six feet, two and a half inches, placing his eye line higher than most in his acquaintance. His is a healthy, if not particularly athletic, build, the growing bulge around his middle having disappeared after the incident. Typically dressed in fashionable (well, muggle clothing that was fashionable when he bought it; he has a limited wardrobe where current wizarding clothing is concerned), immaculate clothing—though nothing too attention-drawing; he's not a young man anymore!—his image is every bit that of the proper gentleman.

His face is a tired one—crows' feet around his eyes, worry lines on his brow—worn from years of stress, and even his round, green eyes have a tired dullness to them that wasn't there in his younger years. He is sparing with his smiles, but when they do come, they're genuine, wide and revealing slightly crooked teeth. Nathaniel's voice is soft, but deep and full of authority, excellent for storytelling in his children's younger years.
History: 1840 | Nathaniel was born the first son to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Gallivan, a wealthy muggle couple residing in London. He was given the names of his grandfathers, Nathaniel Gallivan and George Middleton, both of which he was expected to ultimately inherit from.

1841-1846 | Nathaniel was eventually joined by two brothers (Henry in 1841 and Albert in 1843) and a sister (Elizabeth in 1846). Though they lived, played, and studied together, none of the Gallivan children ever became particularly close.

1848 | It was a peculiar Saturday afternoon, to say the least. Impatient, as they often were, to load into the carriage and head wherever it was their parents were dragging them, the Gallivan boys were roughhousing just along the side of the road when Nate stumbled from the curb into the street itself. Though it seemed to onlookers as if the boy would be trampled by an oncoming horse, the boy was standing upright and unharmed in the street when the beast had past. A similarly strange occurrence happened later that day at the home of George Middleton on the man's seventy-fifth birthday. Once more, the boys were playing a bit more roughly than they should have, knocking over a stone bust of their great-great-grandfather, the marble cracking loudly as it made impact with the floor. As hasty footsteps approached and the boys realized what trouble they were about to find themselves in, Thaniel willed himself invisible, wanting more than anything to escape the verbal—and physical, depending on who would find them—lashing that he was bound to receive for his part in the matter. Both of his brothers were duly chastised, but the maid who had discovered them did not even glance at young Nathaniel.

1851 | After three years, the oddities to occur on the day of Mr. Middleton's birthday were given a cause: Nathaniel was a wizard. This was, to say the least, particularly challenging news for his parents to swallow; not only was their son different, but he belonged to a world that they did not know had existed. His mother's first impulse was to simply disown the boy, however Theodore was reluctant to discard his heir, to which he was understandably close, in spite of his... unusual circumstance. The pair would never grow to accept what they declared his "condition" (Hogwarts, they explained to his relatives, was a school for young boys with incurable diseases; while they assured everyone that he was certainly not contagious and that he was expected to live to at least fifty, they nonetheless said he needed a care they could not give him), but continued to accept him as their son.

Than found Hogwarts to be something of a dream world, transfixed by all the new discoveries that lay before him. Sorted into Hufflepuff, he was unabashedly startled when he learned that many of his house- and year-mates had grown up with total knowledge of the world into which he was a newcomer, and while some of the other students poked fun at his muggle upbringing on occasion, his good-natured reactions quickly earned him friends.

1852-1858 | Nate flourished at the school, earning reasonably good grades, serving as prefect, and playing Keeper on the house quidditch team in his sixth and seventh years. It came as quite a surprise when, in his final year at Hogwarts, he was joined in Hufflepuff by his younger sister.

1858-1866 | In spite of his success at school over the years, upon graduation Nathaniel returned to the muggle side of London. Though he often engaged in wizarding behaviour—investing some of his wealth into The Daily Prophet, attending quidditch matches, and keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in potion-making—he was still very aware of his father's expectations for him, taking on "practical" tasks such as sport hunting and ingratiating himself with Theodore's colleagues. It was one such colleague that was the father of the lovely Victoria Hamilton, a muggle woman towards whom Nathaniel quickly developed affection. The two were wed in the summer of 1866, with Victoria completely oblivious to his status as a wizard. Elizabeth married, in something of a scandal, one of her former professors that same year.

1868 | The year brought both sorrow and joy to the Gallivan family. Theodore Sr.'s death in early February struck Nathaniel particularly hard, though the loss was alleviated by the birth of Theodore Jr. just two months later. What was not mitigated was the sting of losing out on the property component of the family inheritance to Henry, a muggle, though Theodore Sr.’s will did leave a generous, albeit lesser, stipend for his firstborn. This did not trouble Thaniel as much as it might have otherwise: now a father, Nate's life was a blissful one, for all that a part of himself had to remain hidden.

1870 | Nathaniel's thirtieth birthday brought him a daughter, Cecily.

1876 | By the end of the year, Nathaniel Gallivan knew he would never be a man free of secrets. The October night began normally enough, with both Nate and Victoria (early into another pregnancy) en route to dinner with family friends. As it often did in private circles those days, talk of witches and wizards found its way to the dinner table. While many had been sceptical as to whether the "issue" actually existed or not, it had become quite fashionable to develop an opinion nonetheless. The Gallivans had always presented a neutral viewpoint (Nate had never wished to draw attention to himself), but that dinner would prove to be the exception as Victoria launched into a well-articulated argument in the favour of magic-users. Floored by her words but thrilled by her sentiment, he resolved to do what he had long neglected: as the carriage set off to take them home, he told his wife his secret.

She didn't react well, and it was only common sense that stopped her from hurling herself into the street to get away from him. Instead, Victoria insisted the carriage be stopped, and before he could think of a comforting word, she was running off. As any responsible husband with a pregnant wife roaming the streets alone at night would do, Nathaniel took off after her. In the years to follow, he would severely regret that choice, not because of the affliction that befell him as a result, but because he would never erase the image of his beloved wife's corpse, disfigured by some sort of creature, lying on the filthy cobblestone street, eyes that had once been so full of joy made lifeless in death.

As he would remember when he awoke in hospital—a magical one, not one of the local muggle ones—the werewolf that had slain his wife had not been gone upon his arrival, turning its sights instead on Nathaniel. He refused to voice his identity, remaining in silent shock until he was well enough to leave. When he returned home, it was to a shaken family that had thought him dead as well, and all he would say on the matter was some muttered story about waking up with amnesia in hospital. Not three days after Victoria's funeral, he and his two children left their London home for the family house in the countryside where, in a particularly eccentric move, he dismissed the entirety of the house staff.

He knew what was coming before the moon had even risen, sending his children to spend the weekend with their Aunt Elizabeth while he secluded himself as deep as he could in the forest surrounding the manor. The transformation proved to be the most agonizing physical pain he had ever experienced, and the utter degradation from man to beast left him shaken and afraid of himself in the weeks to follow. One cycle led to another, and another, before Nathaniel finally came to terms with the curse that seemed to have befallen him—and the realization that going on as he had was impossible.
His children were told of their heritage, but not his condition, and not the circumstances of their mother's death. House elves were brought on to tend to the manor and the children, with one specifically directed to tend to his personal needs: restraint and silence during the time of the full moon.

1877-1882 | The family moved to Hogsmeade not long after its founding, as Nathaniel felt that the muggle world in which he had been living was not well-suited to his particular... requirements. A large house in the Bartonburg district was commissioned, with a feature that the neighbours likely didn't have: a hidden, stone room off of the main cellar, sealable and made silent by house elf magic. His prison during the moon, as if his existence wasn't a prison enough.

As time passed, he was relieved, though not surprised, when Theodore's turn to attend Hogwarts arrived, glad that he had not dragged his children into the magical world for nothing. Mercifully, in his mind a lucky break from God, or whatever it was that determined his fate, neither child ever seemed to think anything amiss when he had his "moods" once a month, nor did friends question—or connect the dots—when he was unable to attend some function or another. Things could not, however, remain as they were forever, and in 1880, reluctantly and only when faced with societal pressure, began courting again. Veronica was nice enough, for all that she hadn't even been born when he graduated from Hogwarts, and Nathaniel went through the motions, eventually proposing to her in spite of concerns that she might uncover just what had befallen his last wife. The two married in May of 1881, with their first child arriving in May of the following year.

1883 | A rough year for Nathaniel in which both his sister and his eldest child discover his secret. Unbeknownst to him, he also turns a young girl. Veronica delivers their second child, a daughter called Selene.

1885 | Cecily finds out. She takes it terribly, and it is the darkest blemish to ever mar their relationship.

1887 | And now Veronica knows, too.

The Minister’s daughter is publicized as having been turned, and while Thaniel knows he was altogether uninvolved, his heart goes out to the poor girl. The publicity the Urquart family receives makes him begin to question his own role in society, but as the hubbub dies down, so too do his anxieties—for now.
Personality:
LOYAL — HARDWORKING — FAMILY MAN — RESERVED

Nathaniel has always been what he would consider a good man. Loyal, diligent, and not at all manipulative, he does his best at all times to do what is right—at times to his own expense. Terrified of letting those around him down, he changes what he can and hides what he cannot.

The loss of his wife and his subsequent transformation has made him more worrisome than he was in his younger years, as he takes great pains to ensure no one ever finds out what fate has caused him to become. Those worries have increased exponentially since his children and wife discovered his condition, particularly in light of Cecily’s reaction to it.
Other:

❧ Nathaniel is a werewolf, a fact known only to his wife and eldest children.

❧ Though publically hesitant about female players in a professional league, Thaniel has hired them when it is in the best interests of his team—and supported by his coach or captain.

❧ His patronus is an Irish Wolfhound.

❧ Any boggart that faces him takes the form of Nathaniel himself, in an awkward, wolf-man state.
