Charles was having an unpleasant time of it which wasn't unusual for him in these circumstances. To make things worse, he'd almost walked straight into the company of a young woman he most certainly did not want to have to exchange pleasantries with and so he'd just about managed to turn himself around and walk in the opposite direction. He had just about put a comfortable distance between them when he heard someone call out to him. Reluctantly, he stopped in his tracks and looked about for the culprit.

If it was true, it was merely a coincidence that it was the first thing he could think of to say without being mildly insulting.
