Ezra's brow wrinkled at the man's tone, though more in confusion than consternation. "It didn't seem worth fighting over," he said, but this explanation seemed a little weak even to him. It wasn't worth fighting over when he could afford it either way, and he wouldn't have been the sort to cause a scene over a bit of candy, but he could just as easily have walked away and not paid her anything.
"I suppose if I'd pushed she'd said I was paying for more than the candy," he mused. There had been a certain air when she'd fished it out and presented it to him, as though it was special and precious — or at least that it suited her purposes for him to think it was. Maybe all he was paying extra for was her showmanship, but if she was a conwoman than he supposed she was a persuasive one.
