For the last few weeks he had been so very careful, trying hard not to make things any worse with Daff, to keep things calm and restrained and gentle and smooth, that he was almost relieved to be called up to a fight.
And Fieldmarshal Potts might be as good as a brick wall to run up against, but he could dig his heels in just as well. “I’m sure I don’t,” Elias agreed, civilly, “but I did understand the nurse’s advice for Daffy. A Christmas party is just too much – she’s on bedrest. It’s for her health, not for anyone else’s sake.” Honestly, how could her mother argue with that?
