The Wizard, The Wolf, & The Wardrobe
#1
May 23, 1891 — Forbidden Forest

It was about half an hour to sunset, and Ford was alone in the Forbidden Forest with a wardrobe. Well, maybe not entirely alone. The dementor was here, too, still trapped behind the closet doors. Since it wasn't exactly a living thing, though, Ford wasn't sure if its presence counted. It certainly didn't make him feel any less alone — but that was the whole point of it, making people feel alone and desperate and empty.

Hopefully, he wouldn't have to do this much longer. Hopefully the infant dementor locked in the wardrobe was close to starving itself out by now. Hopefully, if there was some sort of connection to Cash that transcended distance and allowed it to linger on as long as Cash was struggling through this, Cash would be making real progress soon. However long it took, though, Ford was committed to it now. For one thing, he needed to make sure that it was still here, in the wardrobe. They'd used a spell to seal it shut, so it wasn't as though someone could unleash it just by accidentally nudging the door handle, but it would only take one spell to let it out. This wasn't a high-traffic area of the forest by any means, but if Ford had found it, it stood to reason that someone else could, too. Beyond just making sure the doors were closed, though, Ford was monitoring it as best as he could. It was an imperfect science, because he couldn't see it, but if he walked up to the door of the wardrobe and put his hand against the wood he could still feel it, and from there he could try and determine if it was getting stronger or weaker.

There was a danger to this too, though. Just by being here, by being this close to it, Ford was giving it a chance to steal nourishment from him — giving it a chance to latch onto him. If he lost track of himself during one of these little check-ins, he might end up making things worse... or he might end up with a hungry infant dementor following him around, if things got really out of hand. So it was important to do his best not to give it anything it could use. In the room at the Muggle inn he'd told Lestrange to talk about Quidditch, but obviously that wouldn't work for him because he knew nothing about the sport beyond the most rudimentary basics, so he had to find something else to keep his mind busy but unemotional. The first time he'd come out here he'd tried to walk through the house he'd grown up in, room by room, but that was too fraught with emotion now that he'd sold their home and would likely never see it again. It was too easy for the dementor to twist it, and as he'd sat with his hand on the wood of the wardrobe he'd actually felt the grief and loss leaking out from him. Far too dangerous.

He'd switched to the Bartonburg house, and he was having better luck with that. There were still little things he ought to avoid, little things that had memories bound up in them, but not so many as the home they'd all grown up in. He could close his eyes and he could mentally tidy his bedroom, or sort the books on the shelf in the parlor, and while he did half his mind could be monitoring how he felt — how successful the dementor was at tugging things out of him. It was definitely getting weaker now, and there was hardly any response at all as he mentally searched through the kitchen cabinets looking for the tea. Experimentally, Ford turned his mind towards something a little more emotionally involved. There was a knit coaster on the counter for them to rest the kettle on when it was hot. Their old housekeeper had made it, back in the other house. She'd worked for them for years, so long that she felt almost like an aunt rather than a servant, and Ford knew she felt the house was hers as much as they did. He'd dismissed her when he sold the place, because Noble already had a housekeeper — one who was live-out and part-time and therefore more affordable — and this was the last relic of her, this coaster that she'd knit ages ago. He went through the pattern in his mind: a circle of yellow fading to orange fading to red in the center.

Ford's chest tightened as sorrow welled up within him. He gasped and pictured himself hurriedly tucking the coaster into the kitchen drawer, turning his attention instead towards the kettle and going through the motions of putting water on to boil. So that was too much, then. The dementor could still latch on to that. Good to know. Ford forced himself to take a deep breath, thinking about the steps it took to make a pot of tea and trying to flatten out his emotions again — wrestling with this dementor, although his hand hadn't moved from the smooth wood of the door.

Then he heard a noise, something that was here and not at home in the kitchen where he'd been picturing himself. Ford's eyes popped open and he whirled towards the sound, hoping to only see a bird or a fox wandering by, oblivious to him since he'd been holding so still for the past — how long had he been out here? He didn't actually know, but it was probably time to be heading home, anyway. If he was gone too long someone might ask him where he'd been, and he wouldn't have had any answer.

Fuck, he was so fucked. Endy had lucked into an afternoon with good food and a comfortable place to lounge until the evening. But he had fallen asleep and now he was running out of time. He didn't want to hurt people but he also didn't trust the Ministrys containment place. What if that was their secret way of getting rid of werewolves? And besides, it probably cost money and he rarely had enough of that as it was. The Forest was good enough for his needs if he went deep into it enough. Most people knew to stay out of it on a full moon.

Never mind that he had not been among those that knew hence his monthly predicament.

He looked towards the sun as he ran deeper into the forest. He was running out of time. He began stripping, not noticing that he wasn't actually alone as he took his shoes, socks and shirt off. His barefoot snapped a twig, making him utter a curse. But then his ears caught on to something else and he turned to face it. To find a man. "Oh, hello," Endy said, as if he was not currently in a state of partial undress. But then his eyes caught sight of a wardrobe. What the hell?

"Oi, you moving in here with that wardrobe? Bit of a weird thing to do." Not that he was one to say anything about it considering his sometimes-'bed' was somewhere in this very forest. And, you know, he was in the middle of stripping down.

Ford had been hoping for some sort of small animal, and had been afraid it might have been the large and unfriendly sort of animal instead. He had considered the possibility that it might be a person only briefly, so when his eyes lit on the other man his expression was one of clear surprise — and that was before he noticed that the other man was half naked. Ford's cheeks flushed slightly, and he had no idea what to say or even what to think. He hadn't expected anyone to come this far into the forest, which was why he'd thought it was a safe place to stash the wardrobe. If this fellow had come out here to — get into trouble with someone, in the clothes-off sort of way, he'd gone far out of his way to do it.

Before he could really consider this too much, however, the man had asked him about the wardrobe. Ford got to his feet as quickly as he could and stepped between the wardrobe and the man, almost protectively. Protectively wasn't the right word, not for the dementor he was actively trying to starve, but — well, he couldn't let anyone bother it, so he supposed in a way he was a little protective of it.

"It's a bit weird to run around in the forest half-dressed," he countered uneasily. He had an impulse to draw his wand, although the man was not openly threatening. Surely that wouldn't be necessary... but if he pressed Ford about the whole situation with the wardrobe, Ford wouldn't have any good explanation for it. And if he tried to open it... well, Ford wouldn't let him open it, no matter what happened. The thing lurking in there could have killed Cash, or might try and kill Ford — after over a month lurking in the forest with only Ford's occasional emotions to sustain itself, he honestly wasn't sure which of them it might be more inclined towards, but he wasn't planning to take the risk either way.

The man looked just as surprised to see him as Endy was. Whatever this man was doing with the wardrobe, he was quite protective of it. And taller than him though most people were, Endy supposed. Maybe this was some weird, sexual thing. Endy had met all sorts in his line of work so he wouldn't be too surprised. He knew a man who just liked to photograph Endy holding teacups. No actual sex involved. Just naked Endy with teacups.

"Fair," he chuckled when the man told him it was a bit weird to run around the forest. "I do usually run around it fully undressed but you've disrupted me." With fur but Endy generally liked making men feel awkward. The logical side of Endys mind told him that he should try and shoo this man out of the forest. It wasn't a safe place to be, especially with Endy around. But his insatiable need to make this man feel as awkward as possible with a bit of flirting won out. "Would you mind?"

The color in Ford's cheeks deepened at his response. He'd expected that pointing out that the other man was half naked would turn the tables and get him to be the one making excuses, but apparently not. Ford had never interacted with someone with no shame before, and it drew him up short. He had no idea what to do with this. He wished he had drawn his wand, because now he felt vaguely assaulted even though the man hadn't moved (and probably couldn't have done much damage if he had; he was fairly small), but he didn't have the presence of mind to draw it now when he was still trying to wrap his mind around that. So he was here to get into trouble with someone, and he was apparently going to keep on with it even though Ford had caught him at it. Embarrassing as the idea was of its own merits, it also meant that there might soon be another person to contend with in the woods, and another person to protect the wardrobe from.

"Would I mind what?" Ford asked, not following at all. His brain still hadn't really moved on from the fact that this fellow was shirtless and didn't even seem embarrassed about it.

Endy felt a sense of accomplishment as the color on the other mans cheeks deepened. "If I got naked, of course!" Endy exclaimed as if it was the most obvious thing. He would have loved to keep pestering this poor man the way he did that Hogsmeade Constable bloke but the sun was slowly lowering in the sky. He focused on folding his already discarded clothes away and sealing them into a bag. He usually made a hole to hide him in and while he did not think this man would want his clothes, one never could tell.

"You really should leave, though. It's getting dark and the forest is no place to be when it is dark." Unless you were an animal, of course. Which he would be soon enough.

If he what? Some of the color drained out of Ford's cheeks. Seeing a shirtless bloke in the woods was one thing, but the possibility of seeing the rest of him was, frankly, a little terrifying. "Of—of course I mind," he sputtered, at a complete loss as for how to handle this. What was he implying by asking if Ford minded? Maybe not anything, because maybe he was just the sort of person who wouldn't mind who saw them naked, but... did people like that exist? Ford had certainly never met one before, and he didn't particularly want to be talking to one of them now.

"I'm — I'm not leaving," Ford protested, voice a little panicky despite his attempts to swallow back the surge of anxiety he'd been seized with at the prospect of being alone in the woods with a naked man (the only worse thing would be not being alone in the woods with a naked man — who was he meeting out here, and what would they think if they stumbled upon the pair of them like this?!) "Wh—whatever you're planning to do, you can't do it here. This is— public indecency," he attempted, though it was not particularly public; that was sort of the whole point of putting the wardrobe here in the first place. And he would have liked to have left and let this young man do whatever sort of depraved things he was planning for the evening in peace, he really would have, but he couldn't leave a stranger alone with the wardrobe.

"Well, that's no fun," Endy chirped when the man said that he minded. As much fun as he was having though, he now had his mind a little more on that lowering sun in the sky. "And I am very sorry but I am going to have to whether you mind or not. I can't afford new pants if these ones tear."

And the man was stubborn about not leaving which was going to pose a bit of a problem. He could just move to a different spot in the forest to strip down but this man would still be in danger. "But I have to do it here. It would not be safe for folks elsewhere. It isn't safe for you to be here even if I do go elsewhere." The evidence of that was on his back and currently covered thigh. "I doubt you would want to be sporting a thing like the one I have one my back." As he spoke, he turned so that the man could get a good look at the large claw shaped scar there. He had a small, delicate back so it very much stood out against his pale, freckled skin. Would the man get the hint now? He really was such a good, decent person for trying to save this strangers life.

The idea that whatever he was planning to do tonight might result in tearing his pants was — distressing. That was really the only appropriate word for it: the idea distressed him. Ford was distressed. (There had been no mention of anything like that in the pseudo-pornographic diary Elmer Macmillan had given him — what did that even entail?)

Then he turned around to show the scar on his back, and Ford's eyes widened. He took a quick step back without thinking about it, and suddenly he had his back up against the wardrobe, which wasn't a good idea at all. He'd been very deliberate before about how close he'd been getting to it, so that the dementor wouldn't be able to latch onto him too tightly. Just putting a hand on it was enough for it to lash out at him. Now it was touching his whole back, and digging into his shoulder — and as a result he didn't know if the flash of fear that went through him as he put the pieces together about the naked man in the woods with the claw-shaped scars was really genuine, or something the dementor had seized upon and amplified. They wanted emotion, any emotion, and they were good at dragging it out — so even a slight spark of fear was not good.

"You're a —" he started, but his breath caught in his throat and he didn't finish the sentence. Fuck, fuck, fuck, he thought, panicking. He was aware that he shouldn't panic, because the dementor would eat that up, but he couldn't help it. What the hell was he supposed to do now?

Now that got the mans attention and clued him into the state of things. Endy was a little offended when the man stepped back. What did he think he was going to do? Launch at him in human form? He was a lover, not a fighter so that was quite unlikely.

"A beauty? A redhead? A man?" Endy said with his brow raised as he waited to see if the man was planning to do anything besides panic.

The werewolf (because that was what he was; Ford may not have ever interacted with one before but he was in the same department as the Werewolf Capture Unit, so he didn't need to be beat over the head with the evidence before he connected the dots) was teasing him, which seemed unnecessary. Shouldn't he have had a little more of a sense of urgency about this, instead of making suggestive remarks about running around naked?! Because holy fuck, he was a werewolf and they were in the middle of the Forbidden Forest. Ford didn't keep track of full moon nights (why would he have?) but of course there had to be a full moon just minutes away, because why else would this man have been here, and why would he have outed himself in such a dramatic fashion?

But what was Ford supposed to do? He couldn't let this man break the wardrobe open after the moon came up and unleash the dementor on the outskirts of Hogsmeade. It might go and find Cash, or it might come and find him, or it might just latch onto someone else who seemed an opportune target, someone who was innocent in all of this and would be defenseless against it.

"Fuck," Ford hissed, more to himself than to the werewolf, because — because fuck, that was why. There really was no better word for it.

"There's enough time for me to help you hide your wardrobe thing elsewhere if that is what you are so twitchy about. I'm used to hiding stuff so that werewolves won't break 'em in here. Or you could use a delusion charm on it. " He meant disillusionment charm but he had never gone to Hogwarts so had no idea of the spells actual name.

"I am a man first, you know," he grumbled more to himself as the other man seemed quite intent on panicking, even hissing out curse words. "It's not like I asked for this monthly bullshit and have people like you act like this to me because of it." Granted, it was probably Prosper he was really 'speaking' to with those words despite the man not being anywhere around - but the stranger in the woods had the misfortune of triggering his long-repressed ire about his new livelihood. It didn't help that his ire was compounded by the usual pains and general 'feeling ill' things that came with an approaching transformation.

Ford looked up at the suggestion, surprised. "You could?" he asked, eyebrows raised. He pushed himself up off of the wardrobe and immediately felt a little more at ease. At least some of the panic had been the dementor, then. He'd probably set back his progress in starving it out by at least a month with that little internal anxiety attack, but there was nothing to be done about it now. The dementor was still locked in the wardrobe, and there was — maybe — a way to hide it, so not all was lost.

"I'm not — trying to act like anything," he explained quickly, feeling flustered. He really hadn't meant to be... impolite, he supposed. What to say to a werewolf you meet in the Forbidden Forest at ten minutes to moonlight had not been covered in Hogwarts etiquette classes. It was clear that his reaction had an impact on the other man, though, and Ford did regret that. He just also didn't really have time to deal with it, so hopefully this fellow wasn't particularly emotionally fragile, or anything. "It's just — it's dangerous. The wardrobe. You can't touch it."

"There's some trees you could transfigure open or some such, stash it in and seal it up again." He personally did not quite know the spells but he had seen it done. Some criminals hid their loot that way. He supposed it might work for a wardrobe too. "Or dig a hole deep enough to stash it in. Is what I do with my clothes and things."

A wardrobe was dangerous? "You were touching all up on it earlier. You ain't gonna drop dead now, are ya?" He eyed the man in a mix of mild suspicion and concern. He did not want to be branded a murderer if this mans corpse was found near where his wolf furballs or something might be found.

"No, I — that's different," Ford said, flushing slightly as he glanced back at the wardrobe. "I know what I'm doing." Sort of, a little. He didn't really, not at all, but at least he knew what the wardrobe contained, which meant he was better off than this fellow would have been, and certainly better off than a random passerby who might think this was just an ordinary piece of furniture that had somehow ended up in the forest.

"Do you know how to do that, with the tree?" he asked, with a skeptical glance towards the surrounding forest. He didn't see any trees around that looked big enough to house a wardrobe, anyway, but he also didn't know any particularly efficient digging spells. And suppose he buried this wardrobe and then couldn't find it again the next time he came out here? He still needed to be able to check on it, to make sure nothing happened to let it escape.

Uh huh, okay. Endy didn't believe the man knew what he was doing for a single moment. Otherwise the thing wouldn't be out in the woods where any stray animal could have knocked it over or something. "What were you planning to do if a normal animal knocked it over?" Though maybe it wouldn't have had no effect from a normal animal?

"No but I know a lotta digging spells. You can put something in, all discreet like, so you can find it later." There was also no way of telling if he would dig it up as a wolf but he doubted. He never remembered what he got up to during transformations but he had never found himself near dug up holes.
