The Night Is Young

March 22, 1890 - Ravenclaw Tower
Time for bed was almost upon them as Opal worked on her studies. She had an essay due the next morning and she was going through what she hoped was her final draft. Always wanting to make sure she didn't miss something. Spelling mistakes alone were embarrassing enough. Suddenly, it felt rather cold. Cold enough for it to be odd this time of year.

Looking up, she watched as the candlelight in the room went out one by one. A puff of her own breath was the last thing she could see clearly before the light was completely gone. Then each Ravenclaw that hadn't already headed off to bed heard the sound. The mischievous laughter of Peeves. Some began to panic. Opal sighed softly at the foolish behavior that the spirit-like being was prone to. "Goodness." She mumbled softly. "It's alright everyone, just another Peeves prank. Let's get some light back into this room." If she could just find her wand.

Dunstan Ruskin/Bragi Holm

Dunstan was one of the last Second Years in the common room that night, pouring over Charms revision with his chin on his hand. Eventually he realised that he was getting too sleepy to focus, so he closed his textbook — and fwoof, out went the nearest candle. He blinked with surprise as each went out one by one, plunging Ravenclaw Tower into darkness.

As a few students muttered in alarm, Dunstan — now fully alert — reached for his wand and muttered "Lumos". His wandtip lit, and he peered through the silver light to see one of the Sixth Years swiftly surmising what had happened. Peeves.

Dunstan stood up, glancing around curiously. He heard Peeves' tell-tale titter come from... somewhere. "Where even is he?" he murmured to the Sixth Year.

Wand located, she lit up her area of the room to find one other who had done the same. "I am not sure. But it seems to be getting colder as well." Not good, considering that the doors were prepared for warmer weather approaching. Were the dorms even cold? Or was he limiting his torment to the common room?

Opal looked around for any sign of the chaos creator. "Keep an eye out, and please help me gather our things. It seems that whatever studying we were doing must wait until morning." Hopefully she would be able to discuss the event with the matron. Some still looked panicked, and it seemed that those who remained calm would have to be the ones to actually gather everything to bring back to the dorms.

Colder? Dun looked at the senior quizzically, having felt no such thing. But he didn't really get cold... perhaps it had something to do with his vampire heritage. So he took her word for it.

Dunstan accepted the older Ravenclaw as the leader of the situation, and nodded, placing his lit wand carefully on his chair as he put his textbook away in his satchel and helped a panicky Third Year do the same.

But then he paused, distracted — for he'd heard Peeves giggle again, and this time it was coming from the other side of the common room. "I think he's in the walls."

His confusion on the matter was odd. Were half-vampires really not effected by the cold? That didn't sound right, but it felt out of place to question it. Especially since she could still see her breath in the small light that they were providing.

Placing books and papers in various bags, she stopped to listen when he mentioned something about walls. Looking around warily, she took a breath to try and keep herself calm. Panicking was not going to help anything. "Don't let him get to you." She stated as she continued her work. Just get everyone back to their dorms and hope that too many dorms would make him grow bored.

Dunstan still did not feel cold, but nor did he assert — to himself or anyone else — that part-vampires were impervious to cold. Simply that he personally did not mind the cold, and vaguely suspected that his ancestry might play a part.

Dunstan blinked at the girl — "don't let him get to you"? What did that even mean? Dun was not panicking, he just thought perhaps there was something they could do if they figured out what Peeves was playing at, and tried to stop him.

But their self-proclaimed leader was smoothly adamant that they should simply gather their things and go to the dormitories, so Dun was obedient, fastening his satchel and putting it over his shoulder, then continuing to help the nearby Third Year.

Opal's main focus on life was not on what half-breeds felt that were different from normal people. Not that there was need to mention it. Perhaps some other time. Like when they could see the entire room before them.

The sixth year was hardly proclaiming anything. Just wanting to get done what needed to get done. Everyone else seemed either panicked or determined to do things on their own. Someone needed to keep reason and logic in their minds as they dealt with Peeve's foolish games.

Having been helping a fourth year, the person looked at her with worry when she said to not let Peeves get to them. Perhaps she should clarify. "My apologies, I should have been more specific. I meant, to not let him get to you mentally. Try not to think on his taunting." She explained calmly. This seemed to cause the fourth year to relax some.

With them all huddled in one room, it seemed all too easy for Peeves to continue his torment. If everyone separated to their dorms, either he would pick one dorm and it could be handled more easily with familiar peers, or he would get bored and move along. The second option being the most preferred.

Dunstan, who remained perfectly relaxed, passed the worried Third Year her quill and gave her a small, kind smile. Dun was older than most Second Years due to having started school late, and even older than a couple of Third Years, and this Third Year seemed particularly slight and anxious as she glanced around for Peeves, who was of course nowhere to be seen.

The poltergeist's giggling had stopped... but this made Dun wonder privately if the mischief-maker had something else up his sleeve to add to the darkness and the cold...

The end of the giggling certainly did not help matters. The fourth year whimpered softly from the sudden change. Finishing in grabbing the student's belongings, she handed them over. "Go to your dorm." She instructed softly. With a small nod, the fellow student obeyed as Opal set out to help another student. That was when things started falling off of the tables.

As items yet to be put away started falling from surfaces, Dunstan grabbed a falling book before it could land on someone's foot. Then he grabbed for a falling goblet, but — "urgh..." it transpired to be half-full, and spilled pumpkin juice all down his robes.

Oh Merlin, was Peeves having a grand old time tonight. Spotting the pumpkin juice incident, she let her light go out briefly so she could cast a spell to make the clothes clean again. Casting lumos once more was just in time to see ink fall on her own clothing. Sighing once more as the night went on, she cleaned that up as she tried to grab what she could for others and help try to make sure they weren't leaving the common room a total mess.

"Everyone who already has their things, please go to your dorms. Hopefully with less victims around he will grow bored."

Dunstan was about to thank the student who'd cast a cleaning spell on his robes (and then on herself too, as a pot of ink tumbled), when he heard someone yelp behind him as they failed to catch their own textbook.

Dun stood by the door to the boys' dormitories and let the younger students go up first, before joining them himself, wondering dully if Peeves would be there waiting for them with a Cheshire cat grin.
