It Starts to Feel Like Home

Alina shrieked loud enough that a dog howled in the distance. With that, she darted away from her mother and continued to run around in avoidance of the now stinky woman. But the coughing gave her pause as she glanced back and slower. "Ma?" She asked after a moment and coming to a stop. A worried look on her face.

Work had done quite a number on the woman and forced her to take it easy from time to time as her lungs often couldn't cope. She even lost a finger at one point, used that as an excuse to get Alina to start counting to ten, as she was only able to go to 9 on her own hands.

Cough. Cough. Hack. Spit. A hint of dark red muddled with the brown earth. "Oy, fine lass, fine me wee bit." She said as she finally straightened up. "Now come help me get these clothes in we'll do the small bits first, they'll dry faster and then we can do the bed linens."

She waited for Alina to return to her side and began tossing small articles into the water tubs, and the sheets over Alina. One sheet, two sheet, three sheet four. She looked around, "Well where'd ye go lass?" A hint of mischief and amusement in her voice. "Wee bit? Where ye go wee bit?" She called out in good humor.

The young lass did not like seeing her mother like this. Worry filled her eyes and heart as she saw her mother coughing so much. The spit didn't look too promising either. She followed her mother back obediently and began to help.

Before the sheets started being piled on top of her that is. She gave a shocked squeak. And before long, she couldn't really see. She didn't know if she wanted to laugh or whine, and her mouth formed a hint of both as she tried to find her way out of the sheets.

Ronan laughed as the wee bit became lost beneath the sheets, "Where's me wee bit?" She taunted with affection. She herself went to drag a stool over to the wash tubs as well as a bucket that had a bunch of lye soap. Soon she was setting down to buisness scrubbing the clothes vigorously, particularly the rags women used for their monthlies, though she doubted under such circumstances she could get all the blood out.

Her voice remained soft and kind, "Oh where could she be?" It was encouragement really. Ronan had put her up a proverbial tree and now it was up to the girl to get down. "I still don' see her, maybe she's playin hide and go seek?" It also took the child's mind off a more serious matter, her mother's health, or at least Ronan hoped.

One sheet had been shaken off, but that did little to help Alina see. It was beginning to distract her, but it also stopped her from helping clean clothes. There were muffled noises under the sheet. Squeaks and hints of giggles. Attempts at answering her mother, though the sheets kept getting in her mouth.

How could she not worry of her mother? Even as a small one, she continued to worry. To have a hint of fear of her mother not coming home for one reason or another. But what could she do in her current state and age?

One needed money to make a difference, and she didn't have that. One needed full independence, another thing she lacked. One needed knowledge, something she still was working on. Something that she would later continue to work on for reason of improving herself to improve her life. And even now, it was something to be thought about.

Ronan reached out and tickled the girl in between scrubbing various articles, but would not help her out from under the sheets. It was a lesson in play, and she knew her independent munchkin would eventually figure it out. "Oh think the place be haunted now, think I gots me ah wee ghost." She teased, and then the scrubbing could be heard once more.

"Wonder if this new ghost done take my wee bit, what is me to do bout it?" She asked and then tickled. Ronan worked very hard to get them even the smallest of conveniences, and because of it every day was a new fight, but she wouldn't trade any of it for the world. Her sister was so much like their Mam, such a blessing, like she had an angel's heart, and Alina. Alina kept her going. When her feet were covered in blisters, Alina kept her going. When her stomach felt like it would devour her from the inside out, Alina kept her going. She looked over and her shoulder and smiled and laughed. "Be brave me wee bit, show that ghost what ye made of."

#39
The tickling did not help. As such, it made Alina squeak more and thus the sheets got caught in her mouth repeatedly. With all of the struggling, another sheet fell off and Alina could see a vague form of her mother.

And the girl kept fighting. Coughing a little here and there from the sheets. But she fought. But one stumble had her splashing into one of the buckets, and she cried out.

Ronan quickly dropped the rags and pulled the wee girl out of the water and into her lap. "Aye, easy lass ye ok." Her voice was calm and soothing, "Though don' think ye want to bathe in that water." She then went about removing the last two sheets from her daughter and snuggling her in her lap. A warm embracing hug with a kiss on the cheek. A chuckle emerged, "Oy ye hair is ah mess." Her right hand went to smooth it out a bit, "Ready to help me scrub scrub scrub?" With each 'scrub' word she rubbed the girl's back.

It should be noted that Alina was in a bit of a shock. It was a little overwhelming if she was to be honest. After the sheets were off, she gasped for air and looked around a little in a daze.

Looking at her mother for a moment, she tried to decide if she really was ready to do something after a moment, she nodded slowly.

Ronan hugged the girl all the more and kissed her other cheek as she looked for a moment a bit loss, "Aww, ye alright lass, just uh bit of water and suds." She set her off her knee and picked up some more clothes scrubbing the cloth together, rinsing in the water and then repeating. She had no need to instruct Alina on what to do as this wasn't the child's first time, and to do so would probably irk the wee bit to no end given her independent streak.

Once the small pieces were good she went to start hanging them on the line to dry, or really to just give them a place to rest so she could start with the medium sized garments, shirts, pants, and the like. She looked to Alina, "Go get ye wand lass, goin to need help with this bit." She said with a wink. Now Alina didn't have an actual wand, but a good trusty stick would do in this game. She pulled out her own wand and waited, then pointed it to the water when Alina was ready. "1...2...3...Tergeo!" She said clearly and the water magically began to disappear. The same went to the next tub.

With two dry tubs she pointed her wand at the first once more, "Oy, now what is that spell that makes the water, heat done gots to me mind, and I ain' gots the slightest...wee bit do ye know?" She quirked a brow to her lass's direction.

#43
At this point, Alina simply started washing. That was her focus. Kept her from thinking about the sheets feeling like they were choking her with the water. It wasn't a good feeling, as that was why she tried to ignore it.

Her ma's instructions did cheer her up a bit. She got up and went to get the stick. It wasn't hard to find, tucked under one of the mattresses of their home. She joined her mother and pointed her own 'wand' and pointed it at the water. She 'cast' the spell with her mother both times and began to smile.

The girl bit her lip and thought, hopping from one foot to the other. "A... a.... Aguamenti." She said, though she mispronounced the word. To be fair, it was a long and oddly pronounced word for someone so young.

"Aw-gwuh-men-tee" Ronan said slowly letting the girl chase after each syllable with her own tongue. "Aguamenti." She repeated. She smiled and waited for her lass to repeat and then pointed her wand at the tub, "Ready wee bit will say it together 1, focus on water, 2 really hard all your might, 3 Aguamenti!" Te tub began to fill with water, simple spells like these Ronan had done for years, and it was a joy to be able to share them with her daughter in a way that didn't involve a crazy evil nun and a ruler.

Once the tubs were filled she began scrubbing the shirts and pants. This was repeated time and again when it came time for the sheets until everything was on the line, "Alright ready for another spell lass? It's called Fervens Aeris, ye remember what it does?"

#45
Alina repeated her mother. Trying to say it correctly. A couple times, and she got it. Focus, she repeated in her mind. Focus. "Aguamenti!" She said with her mother, though it didn't work for her. Still, she felt helpful and it took her mind off of earlier.

Helping her mother clean, she did feel like she had done something for herself. She liked doing things for herself. It felt like she was a big girl. So it came as a disappointment when she couldn't remember what this spell did and she shook her head sadly.

Ronan pointed her wand to the right of Alina, "Fervens Aeris." She said softly and light breeze of hot air blew beside the girl, "Now ye remember?" She asked. When teaching she made sure to make sure the girl still had a chance to think, rather than use tell her, even if she did practically give away the answer by showing her. Her own gaze remained hopeful despite Alina's sadness, she had all the faith in her.

#47
After another moment, Alina nodded. She thought she knew, anyway. While she was correct, her previous absence of an answer made her slightly hesitant. She didn't like that. Confidence was what she wanted. But she didn't have it when she didn't have it.

Ronan sighed but smiled still, "Hot air charm lass." She kissed the top of her head. "Don' be so hard on yeself lass, magic takes time to learn, and some day with practice ye be damn good at it, better than me even." She lifted her wand, "Ready?" She waited for Alina to lift hers, "Fervens Aeris!" A gust of hot air blew down the laundry lines one by one as she moved between them, wand pointed and extended.

Once the sheets were dry Ronan handed down the smaller articles for Alina to fold, and then folded the larger garments and sheets on her own, each item being placed into the basket in a rather organized fashion so the items could be doled back out to their owner. The final step came in delivering the laundry which involved payment. Ronan let Alina collect the coin while she handed out the clean laundry. "How many coin we got lass?" She asked as they returned to their house and began to venture up the stairs.
