They had already sent their apologies, and no doubt Daffy had told all her sisters personally one way or another, to boot, so Elias had supposed it well understood that she was on bedrest, and as such they weren’t coming to the family’s Christmas eve party.
Apparently not, because a couple of hours before the family party was set to start, Daffodil’s mother was on their doorstep. Elias had let her in as far as the sitting room (this now seemed like a mistake) but had just told her that he was fairly sure Daff was currently asleep. And that their plans had not changed, because she was still – surprise, surprise – on bedrest. “Laurel,” he said, trying his level best to be patient – although he and Daff had been walking on eggshells so much around each other that these days he really had little energy left to spare on other people. “I’m sure you really won’t miss us.”

The audacity! Laurel's brows drew together, her mouth pursing into a thin line as he used her Christian name. Typically she wouldn't have minded, but in such an instance 'Mrs. Potts' or 'Mother' ought to be implied. But his next statement was utterly outrageous that she would allow the slip on her name.

Clearly," She grit out, "
You do not understand the very nature of being a mother." Elias Grimstone was normally one of the easier son in laws, but in this she was finding her impression very much mistake. Her look implied a great deal of what she thought given that he would be a father soon. "[b]You are family and as such you will. be. there." She informed him each word bit out with the finality of an order issued from a commanding officer.

She was irritated: that much was obvious. On some other occasion, Elias might have been horrified, or at least chagrined. But today he couldn’t bring himself to care. For the last few weeks he had been so very careful, trying hard not to make things any worse with Daff, to keep things calm and restrained and gentle and smooth, that he was almost relieved to be called up to a fight.
And Fieldmarshal Potts might be as good as a brick wall to run up against, but he could dig his heels in just as well. “I’m sure I don’t,” Elias agreed, civilly, “but I did understand the nurse’s advice for Daffy. A Christmas party is just too much – she’s on bedrest. It’s for her health, not for anyone else’s sake.” Honestly, how could her mother argue with that?

Despite her ire Laurel felt herself softening. She was worried over her daughter, had been since she had heard them tell her what the nurse had said. But that only made her desire to see her daughter more, to keep her close so she could fuss over her and look after her. It was evident in the way Elias spoke (indeed in the fact that he stood up to her at all, a fact which she might have acknowledged if she hadn't been so upset in the first place) and yet Laurel had already thought of this. "
We're wizards Elias." She scolded sternly. "
There is plenty of magic to keep her tucked into her bed until the time comes, whether that bed is here or in my own home." But there was a nagging thought at the back of Laurel's mind that reminded her that perhaps that many people, the excitement of it all, might at the very root of it be simply too much for Daffy and the baby.
