February 7th, 1895 — Valentine's Ball

Fuck, this was miserable. Morrigan went because it was one of those balls that fell under vague social climbing, which her family was still interested in, but now she wished she had given it a pass. The theme appeared to be love, and love put her in a mood, because she had given it up. Also, she looked better in a soft pink than any of these other witches. It had not taken her long to flee to one of the powder rooms, but she had not stashed anything in her pockets this evening, so she had nothing but champagne to alleviate her general irritation. She sighed and considered the notes. Maybe sending something rude would help her.

Mor exhaled. The door to the powder room opened. She looked up at the other woman. "If you're here to talk about how romantic this is, you should find another one," Mor said, bluntly.

It was Friday evening and Isla had a couple of days of, something that her brother in law had gotten wind of and quickly enlisted the widow to chaperone his daughter to a ball. It had been a bit of a rush to get ready after school but here she was. The ball wasn't unpleasant by any means, but it wasn't her scene, and her wallflower ward hardly needed chaperoning at all.

"Now, Miss Selden, that's not this spirit is it? What would your step-mama say?" she joked to her friend before turning and latching the door so they would not be further disturbed without a prior knock. "I know what you mean though, I've looked out the window at couple of times wondering if I might fit. Are you having a cigarette?" her next actions would depend on Mor's response, if the other woman wanted one, Isla would offer offer her one and take one for herself. If there was any indication of disapproval, then the blonde would say no more and just chew on societies judegment to sate her craving for a little relaxation. Either way she would ensure the window was propped open a little to allow some air unperfumed by the party to circulate.

Isla Bowen was not a debutante, nor was she someone's Mama, so Morrigan was saved from the worst of her fears. "My step-mama would say that I ought to be more supportive of those who participate in society," Mor jested. Her step-mama probably would not actually begrudge her her irritation at all, but Mor liked to have her little jokes.

"I'll take a cigarette," Mor said, looking up from the valentine station. A cigarette was not quite the numbing she wanted, but it would be something. "Not at the school today?" she asked.

Isla pulled two cigarettes out and ignited them with the smallest spark charm. "There we go." she said, breathing deeply and looking out the window. "This weekend is my weekend off so I got roped in for a little chaperone duties by the family. She's so young though, and she has not learned that she should be interested in men yet it appears." She shrugged and let out a short ironic laugh. She wasn't that young and Isla had been married for a fortnight already by this point in her first season. "Maybe she just seems young, I don't know." the witch mused responding aloud to her own inner thoughts.

"I take it you managed to avoid being hit by an enchanted arrow tonight?" pesky little things, and while encouraging people to converse with prospects they might have entertained was fun, would it really lead to genuine connections once the spell wore off?

Chaperoning duty sounded miserable, and Morrigan hoped that she wouldn't be asked. She doubted she would be; she was not exactly a good example of a proper woman.

"Oh, I'd rather be dead," Mor said, with a laugh. Maybe the cupids had known better than to aim for her, or maybe she looked too old — she took a drag of her cigarette. "You too, I think?"
