Phineas spent the bulk of his droned recitation of the rules avoiding eye contact with either of the students, but once he had finished speaking he shot Phineas II a pointed stare in warning, a do not disappoint me.

No pressure or anything, this duel was only being overseen by his father. Phin bowed rather stiffly to Miss McCarthy and hoped she either didn't notice his awkwardness or didn't take it personally. And avoided looking directly at his father. He cast a stinging hex and hoped for the best.

Her first ever duel! Eilish couldn't help her brilliant grin. Signing up had been impulsive-- as most of Eilish's choices were from day to day-- and excitment had her stomach fluttering so badly it was all she could do not to wobble in her curtsy. She gripped her wand tight, tried to control her breathing, failed. So it was that her answering spell came out a little bit breathless.

"Tarantallegra!" she half laughed, aiming at her opponent's kneecaps.

If his son lost to a matron's daughter, Phineas might cry.

He rather wished he could look away now – Phineas II had taken up an unwilling, jerky-looking jig, his own spell entirely impeded.

With a loud tut, Phineas ended the spell and said, with a glower, "Miss McCarthy takes the point, and may cast next."

All wrapped up in the excitement, Eilish nearly forgot to consider her next move. She hopped in place-- just the slightest bounce-- and aimed her wand once more, casting through the back of her head for any little jinx she had picked up in her classes.

Well, anything that wasn't too mean, anyway. Her first thought had been a shrinking jinx, but she remembered something about it being terribly dangerous to use on a human target, and she hadn't the confidence to say she could hit young Mr. Black's robes without adding him to the mix.

"Petrificus Totalus!" she landed on.

Phin wondered if anyone would stop him if he ran off into the Forbidden Forest if he lost. If he was lucky, he'd get eaten by whatever beasts lived in there and never have to live with the shame. "Protego!"

His son: keeled over on the floor, pathetically.

A particular muscle in Phineas' jaw: currently twitching.
