Lachlan stiffened as her side pressed up against him, and he told himself that it was nothing, that this was necessary and he'd feel better if he just allowed himself to be grateful for the warmth. He undid his furs and wrapped them around both of their shoulders, hoping that it would contain the heat to the space between them.

"Perhaps not," he said gruffly, fidgeting in his spot in a useless attempt to make himself more comfortable. They only had to make it until morning. Hopefully by then the sun would out and the cold would be less severe. Maybe, if they were lucky, they might be able to better pinpoint where they were—and if help was nearby.

He rested his head against the wall behind them and let out a yawn. This was worse than the nights he'd fallen asleep on the Hebrides cliffs as a child. The neck ache, he suspected, would be severe when he woke up.
